Wawrinka Escapes from Evans’ Clutches

It was always going to take Wawrinka some time to make the switch from clay to hard courts, having last played in a non-clay event in February. Nearly eight months on, Wawrinka found the going at the St. Petersburg Open rather tough as he fell in the first set to Dan Evans.

Things went on serve in the second set till it was Wawrinka’s turn to push the match into a tie-breaker at 5-6. He faced three match-points at 0-40 but Evans was unable to convert either of them and the Swiss managed to level things off 7-6.

Then again, in the third set, Wawrinka was broken in the very first game but came back to break Evans twice. And while Wawrinka missed out on a chance to serve out for the match at 5-3, he broke Evans at 6-5 to carve out a solid win.

As far as indoor hard court tournaments are concerned, Wawrinka has won just one title there and that had come in Rotterdam in 2015. Last year he did make it to the final at two of them though – one at Rotterdam again and then at the European Open. He lost to Gael Monfils and Andy Murray respectively.

In his second round, he faces a slightly less tricky opponent than he did in the first, which should give the Swiss some breathing space.

Donskoy Finally Wins One

It’s been the kind of year which not too many have enjoyed but Donskoy’s form has made it even tougher for him. Till before the start of this tournament in St. Petersburg Open, Donskoy had played in six competitions at this level and won nothing in the main draw.

In the three previous Challenger competitions he played in, Donskoy had won just one match to go with his best showing at the Canberra Challenger which had come in January – a semifinal appearance.

Which is why he wasn’t even in the reckoning according to bookmakers all around when he took to court for his opener here, starting out at 9/4 as opposed to his opponent, Egor Gerasimov’s 1/3 to clinch this match.

And yet, Donskoy finally managed to find himself some form and came through in two, hard-fought sets. The Russian broke his opponent twice early in the first set and went on to win it 6-4, and then exchanged a break apiece in the second set before grabbing the tie-breaker and the match.

Wawrinka v Donskoy Prediction and Tip

After a tough opener, this should be a relatively easier one for Wawrinka who starts off at 1/5 to win it. Looking at a straight-set victory.

Tip: Wawrinka to win in straight sets: 8/13 (bet365)
