Steve Johnson v Lloyd Harris Head to Head

This will be the second time Johnson and Harris would be facing off in a competitive encounter. In their first, Johnson had registered a straight-set win on the clay courts of Lyon in 2019.

Johnson With Two Challenger Titles This Season

Clay court was never on Johnson’s agenda this season by the looks of things with the only circuit-level match played by the American coming at the first round of the French Open. And he won just two games in his pounding defeat at the hands of Roberto Carballes Baena in that encounter.

Johnson had earlier tried to make it through the qualifiers at the Cincinnati Masters but faltered in his very first match and then won his opener against John Isner at the US Open only to go down in the second round to Ricardas Berankis.

The American’s standout performances this season came at the Challenger level and those happened in the pre-pandemic era. Johnson made it to the final at the Bendigo Challenger where he then defeated Stefano Travalgia to win the title and then followed it up with another trophy from the Indian Wells Challenger.

Unfortunately for Johnson, these results haven’t quite converted into any kind of strong showings at the highest level, with only a quarterfinal at the Delray Beach Open to show for his effort.

Can he make it that far here too?

Qualifier Harris Stuns Edmund

Kyle Edmund was 2/3 favourite to win his first round encounter against the South African qualifier Harris but in the end, it turned out to be a straight-set affair which went in favour of the latter.

Harris, who had earlier won back to back qualifiers from being a set down, came through 7-5, 7-6 (1) to set up this meeting with Johnson.

This follows his showing on clay, where he managed a semifinal at the Forli Challenger and a second round at the French Open. At the latter, he had surprised Alexei Popyrin in the first round before going down to Matteo Berrettini.

The South African’s best showing this season came at the Adelaide International though. In only the second tournament of the season for Harris, he had to win a couple of qualifying rounds to make the main draw before he came through four victories to set up a title-decider against Andrey Rublev.

It was his first-ever ATP final and while he lost to Rublev, it gives the 23-year-old hope he can push towards the latter stages of tournaments. Something that beating Edmund would have also afforded.

Johnson v Harris Prediction and Tip

Harris starts off at 8/13 to win this and his younger legs should put him on that pedestal for us too. Expecting a straight-set win for the South African.

Tip: Harris to win: 8/13 (bet365)
