Dusan Lajovic v Laslo Djere Head to Head
There have been three previous outings between these two players and Djere leads 2-1 overall. It’s 1-1 on the ATP circuit with Djere having won on the Challenger tour as well. All three matches came on clay including their last meeting in the first round of the Madrid Masters last season where Djere beat Lajovic in straight sets.

Lajovic Returns after Surprising French Open Loss
Known for his prowess on clay, Lajovic was expected to go deeper into the French Open draw this year, but he fell in the second round at the hands of Kevin Anderson. Anderson is a former top player but hasn’t had much to show by way of clay court performances and Lajovic had started off as a huge favourite in that match.
That second round loss for Lajovic follows a string of underwhelming, post-pandemic-break results. There was a third round at Rome and then a quarterfinal at the Hamburg Open before he lost to Rafael Nadal and Stefanos Tsitsipas respectively but that had followed opening losses in the Cincinnati Open, US Open and Kitzbuhel Open.
For a player who had won his maiden ATP title last season, Lajovic might have expected to do a lot better, especially after he had helped Serbia win the ATP Cup by winning four of his six singles matches.
Unfortunately, with no semifinal appearance to boast of this year, Lajovic would be hoping he can turn things around here after starting out with a first round bye.

Djere Makes Short Work of Nagal
After getting knocked in the first round at the French Open – interestingly, to Anderson too! – Djere opted to make use of his time featuring at the Parma Challenger prepping for this competition in Italy. He reached the quarterfinal in that tournament, which included a win over India’s Sumit Nagal.
And it was against Nagal itself Djere was drawn to play in the first round here. While Nagal had forced Djere into a third set in Parma, there were no such antics this time as the Serb romped to an easy 6-3, 6-1 win to march into the second round and set up this meeting with Lajovic.
Earlier this year, the 74th-ranked Djere had made it as far as the semifinal of two tournaments, both on clay. The first came at the Cordoba Open where he lost to Diego Schwartzman before he got to the last-four stage in Kitzbuhel more recently.
What made that performance remarkable was he needed to win a couple of qualifiers to get into the main draw before he defeated Albert Ramos-Vinolas, Jannik Sinner and then avenged the Schwartzman loss.
Lajovic v Djere Prediction and Tip
Lajovic might be ranked a good 50 places above Djere but that doesn’t mean he is an overwhelming favourite here – he starts off at 8/11 to win this. As compared to that, Djere is 1/1, which don’t look tempting enough odds to be honest. Expecting a tough three-setter here.
Tip: Three sets in the match: 5/4 (bet365)
