Cilic Gets Gasping Win Over Giron

The short clay court swing for Cilic saw him make it to the third round at the Rome Masters but he then fell in his opener at the French Open after being drawn to play Dominic Thiem.

Interestingly for Cilic, who prefers the hard court surfaces, he had a similar run on that too with an opening defeat at the Cincinnati Masters and a third round at the US Open. Coincidentally, Cilic’s run at Flushing Meadows was ended by Thiem again.

Earlier this year, Cilic had played in only one tournament indoors, featuring at the Marseille Open and he was knocked out in the second round there. His last, best showing indoors was in Basel in 2016 when he won the title, but since then he has had a 15-15 win-loss record on that surface coming into this tournament.

In the first round here, Cilic was stretched to three sets by Marcos Giron, a player who started out at 8/3 against the Croat. Things could get tougher from here on.

Fokina Shocks Ruusuvuori

Starting out as a rank outsider at 11/5 in his first round match, Fokina managed to overcome the Finnish favourite Emil Ruusuvuori in straight sets. For someone with an overall 4-9 win-loss record on indoor hard courts, it was a win to savour.

That said, Fokina’s confidence looked to have taken off at the US Open when he reached the fourth round of a major for the first time in his career. All his three wins came against players who were not just ranked higher but were also heavy bookmakers’ favourites to go the distance.

Following that run, he didn’t have the best of times on clay though as Fokina fell in the opener at Rome and managed just one win at the French Open – and that against a player ranked outside the top 400.

An easy opening win, however, against an odds on favourite here should give him the necessary boost following a barren time on indoor hard court surfaces over the past couple of seasons. Can he convert that into a win over Cilic though?

Cilic v Fokina Prediction and Tip

It’s interesting to see Cilic, while being a favourite isn’t overwhelmingly so at 4/7. Fokina will reckon he has a chance here, and we reckon he has a good chance of winning at least a set.

Tip: Fokina to win a set – Yes: 1/2 (bet365)
