Roberto Bautista Agut v Hubert Hurkacz Head to Head

This will be the second meeting between the players. Their only previous meeting was at the Cincinnati Masters in 2019, which Agut won in straight sets.

Consistent Agut Looking to Brush Off Recent Slam Losses

Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut has been among the more consistent players on the tour for the last season and a half.

Since the Covid-19 hiatus, he has featured in the US & French Opens, as well as the precursors to both at the Western & Southern Open and the ATP 500 in Hamburg respectively.  Incidentally, he did well at both the Western & Southern and in Hamburg, and looked good at both majors until late first week losses to tricky opponents like Vasek Pospisil and Pablo Carreno Busta.

The world number 13 has won one of his nine titles on indoor hard court and is aware the month ahead will be challenging as the shortened season draws to a close. The Spaniard will be a little disappointed that he is not among the likely contenders for the last two spots for the ATP Tour Finals in London next month.

Looking to make the most of the next few weeks and end the season on a high, the second seed Agut was up against French veteran Giles Simon after an opening round bye. It was a close encounter between two gritty and familiar foes.

Both the sets remained close but Agut prevailed in the key moments, taking the first set 6-4, and then upping the ante when needed in the second to clinch it in a breaker.

Hurkacz Hoping to Scale 2019 Heights Again

Poland’s Next Gen rising star Hubert Hurkacz had a breakthrough season in 2019, winning his first ATP title and knocking on the top 25 in the world rankings, ranked as high as number 28 at one point in time.

2020 got off to a strong start for Hurkacz, who had a good outing at the ATP Cup, winning all his singles matches but has not hit any consistent run of form either before or after the pandemic.

Neither the US hard court run this August or the European clay season thereafter proved to be particularly successful for the Pole, who has not managed to get any sort of momentum going. His track record on the indoor courts in recent times has not been great either.

That being said, the number six seed has looked in decent form this week, dispatching Marc Polmans and then Mischa Zverev in straight sets with minimal discomfort and looking in control for most of the match both times. The test only gets stiffer here, with the likes of Agut, Alexander Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime remaining in the draw.

Over the last two seasons, Hurkacz has won just three matches on this surface and lost nine and will be hoping to fix that record in the very near term.

Agut v Hurkacz Prediction and Tip

A clash between contrasting styles and players who are at different points in their careers, but both with the same immediate goal- end the season well. Neither has performed up to potential in recent tournaments and it will be down to who is better on the day.

Expect the Bautista Agut grit to clinch the match in a decider.

Tip: Agut to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
