Murray Searching for Elusive Win

It’s not like Murray had a poor start to the season after resumption from the pandemic break but since his first round win at the US Open, he has lost three matches and not won a single set.

A straight-set loss to Felix Auger-Aliassime at the US Open and another one to Stan Wawrinka in the opener at the French Open might have been on the cards given the difference in the player rankings but he would be particularly bothered by what happened at Cologne last week.

Playing the 61st-ranked Fernando Verdasco might have been his best chance to break the losing streak and set up a meeting with Alexander Zverev. Instead, the former Grand Slam winner lost 6-4, 6-4 to the Spaniard as well, bringing questions about his fitness to the fore.

Murray admitted he struggled to get his best service going, and that was the cause of the defeat.

What he would like to do is look back at his Cincinnati Masters performance and try to hunt for a few positives from there. After all, he had defeated Frances Tiafoe and Alexander Zverev in the first two rounds there, before falling to Milos Raonic in the third round.

In front of him would be a player who at age 28 didn’t have too many tennis performances to show for his experience before the Sardinia Open last week. Now, he has an ATP semifinal under his belt.

Petrovic Makes Solid Gains

For a player who won his maiden Challenger title only last year, it wasn’t too much of a surprise when he fell in the second round of the qualifiers at Sardinia. When Fabio Fognini then pulled out of the tournament because of his coronavirus diagnosis, Petrovic was bumped straight into the second round.

Not too many expected him to follow that up with back to back straight-set wins against pedigreed opponents on clay. Petrovic defeated Roberto Carballes Baena and Federico Delbonis in the next two rounds to make it to his first ever ATP semifinal.

While Petrovic went down rather easily in the last-four, losing 6-1, 6-0 to Marco Cecchinato, he has climbed up to 136th in the world and given himself a vote of confidence – he belongs at the ATP level.

Only difference between the previous week and this would be the change of surface. Indoor hard court will pose a different threat to Petrovic, who hasn’t played on anything but clay since March.

Murray v Petrovic Prediction and Tip

Murray might not be in much of form but he should not have too many problems here and come through – even in straight sets.

Tip: Murray to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
