Maria Sakkari v Kristyna Pliskova Head to Head

Sakkari and Pliskova have played each other twice before this and it’s 1-1 on head to head. Their first meeting came at the 2017 Wimbledon where Sakkari overcame the first set loss to defeat Pliskova in the first round. The second match was at Palermo on clay earlier this season where Pliskova extracted revenge with a straight-set win.

Sakkari Coming off Shock Loss at Roland-Garros

While Sakkari will be satisfied overall with the manner in which she has gone about her business all season, she would have been expecting to go deeper than her third round defeat the French Open.

Sakkari, who had earlier made it to the fourth round at both, the Australian Open and US Open, looked set to make it three in a row at Roland-Garros as well when she took the first set in her third round match against the little-known Martina Trevisan.

For her to then lose the next two including a second set tie-breaker in which she had gone in with a lot of confidence after stalling her opponent from serving it out at 5-3, would have been difficult to digest.

The Greek number one had participated in another indoor hard court tournament before this earlier in the season. That came at the St. Petersburg Open where she made the semifinal before falling to Elena Rybakina but it was a result which would have been bit of a relief given her record indoors before that was 0-7.

Can she now take revenge off a player who had beaten her just two months ago?

Pliskova Hoping to Cause an Upset

Kristyna Pliskova is typically a tough opponent on clay but on hard court and indoor hard courts, things aren’t so straightforward for her.

Since making it to the semifinal in the season’s first tournament she played, Pliskova has won just one match on hard court, and since that win, gone on a six-match losing streak which includes one exhibition match as well.

While Pliskova’s only WTA title came on hard court, it happened four years ago in Tashkent and her form on this surface has deteriorated since. Last year, for instance, she reached the semifinal at Tashkent again but other than that there was only one WTA tournament in which she won back to back main draw matches.

And she had played in 12 hard court tournaments.

As a result, it doesn’t look likely her results would be getting any better after getting drawn an opponent who not just likes playing on this surface but has also been in good form recently.

Sakkari v Pliskova Prediction and Tip

Sakkari won’t just be a favourite here but should also win this in straight sets against an opponent ranked 45 places behind her.

Tip: Sakkari to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
