Elise Mertens v Amanda Anisimova Head to Head
There has been one previous outing between Mertens and Anisimova with the Dutchwoman, ranked 21st in the world right now having gotten the better of her American opponent. This match came at the 2019 Indian Wells Open and Mertens had won 6-4, 6-2 to reach the third round.

Mertens Solid Despite Early Roland-Garros Ouster
Netherlands’ Mertens would be ruing a missed opportunity to go deeper into the French Open after falling in the third round of that competition. Having had a brilliant post-pandemic season up to that point, Mertens looked like she was running away with the match too, having won the first set 6-1 against Caroline Garcia.
Unfortunately for her, Garcia came to the party soon after and Mertens’ own game deteriorated to the extent she fell away in the next two sets to crash out in the tournament.
Mertens wouldn’t be too bothered though. She had earlier come back from her first round loss at Palermo to make it to the final at the Prague Open the very next week.
And that was followed by a semifinals at the Cincinnati Open, a quarterfinal at the US Open, and another quarterfinal at the Italian Open. All in all, the kind of form you want to be in all year.
While Anisimova will be a tough opponent, Mertens should start off with a lot of confidence.

Anisimova’s Played Only Three Matches Indoors
It was 2017 and Anisimova was still playing at the ITF level of competitions, and at the Midland ITF tournament, she had played indoors for the first time. She had failed to make it to the main draw of the tournament and that had been the last time she stepped out to play on indoor court at a competitive level.
Since then she has exhibited some brilliant tennis at times, enough to be looked at as a player to watch out but the American will be getting her first taste of an indoor tournament in over three years.
Unfortunately for her, the form hasn’t been quite supportive in recent times. Sure, she made it to the third round at the French Open but was crushed 6-0, 6-1 by Simona Halep at that stage.
Even before that, in Strasbourg, Anisimova crashed out in the first round and made just the second round in Rome. With just a semifinal in Auckland to show for this year, Anisimova could find it tough against a player who hasn’t wasted too much on players with vulnerabilities.
Mertens v Anisimova Prediction and Tip
Mertens is a heavy favourite at 4/9 with a straight-set win pegged at 11/10. We think Mertens should be able to come through in two sets, even if they are hard-fought.
Tip: Mertens to win in straight sets: 11/10 (bet365)
