Adrian Mannarino v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head

This will be the second meeting between Mannarino and Popyrin with the first having also come in 2020 and an on the indoor hard courts of Montpellier. It was a strange match that saw the Mannarino win the first and third sets to a bagel while losing the second in a tie-breaker.

Mannarino Looking to Overturn Horror Run

Since returning to tennis following the break for pandemic, Mannarino has endured a horror run of sorts. Sure, he made it as far as the third round at the US Open but take that result out and it’s been a phase to forget for the 32-year-old Frenchman.

It started with a first round exit at the Cincinnati Open but the gaps seemed to have been plugged when he reached the round three of the US Open. From there on, however, began his run of four successive opening round exits, including three on clay and one last week at the St. Petersburg Open.

What would be of particular concern for Mannarino is his defeat at the hands of Ilya Ivashka in the first round last week – Ivashka is ranked 129th in the world and had entered the tournament as a qualifier. That Mannarino went down in straight sets in that opener might not have augured too well for the world number 41.

Earlier in the year, Mannarino had defeated Popyrin in another indoor hard court tournament, but went on to lose his very next match to Gael Monfils. He then went down to Pablo Carreno Busta in the opening round of the Rotterdam Open, also on the same surface.

Can he stall his overall and indoor clay court losing streak?

Popyrin Last Won a Main Draw Match in January

The Aussie has never been ranked better than 87th in the world and while he has often been tipped as one to watch for the future, Popyrin’s performances this year have left much to desire.

While he made it to the third round at the Australian Open earlier this year, Popyrin hasn’t done much of note since. In the six ATP tournaments he has played since, the world number 119th has either failed to qualify for the main draw or lost in the first round of those competitions.

Whatever little success he has had, has primarily come on the Challenger circuit, with a semifinal at the Parma Challenger recently being his best performance. Can he convert that and his two qualifying wins here into a rare main draw win at the Cologne Open?

Mannarino v Popyrin Prediction and Tip

Mannarino is 4/7 to win this one to Popyrin’s 5/4 and given the kind of form both players bring to this encounter, it could turn out to be a tight contest. Backing a repeat of their previous meeting.

Tip: Mannarino to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
