Dan Evans v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head

The pair have met three times before, and Evans leads their head to head series by two matches to one. The Englishman won their match in the Knoxville Challenger event in 2015, and again at Delray Beach last February. However, in their last meeting in Basel a year ago, Tiafoe turned the tables with a straight sets win.

Evans Struggled to Beat Qualifier

Evans has been in terrible form recently, losing in the first round of the last four tournaments he entered – the Rome Masters, the Hamburg Open, the French Open and last week in St. Petersburg.

In fact, the last time he won a competitive match prior to Tuesday was at the US Open where he reached the second round, only to lose to the world 74, Corentin Moutet, of France.

It will, therefore, have come as a relief to him to have beaten Salvatore Caruso on Tuesday in the first round in Antwerp, although he made hard work of it against the Italian qualifier.

He started well, breaking the Italian in the first game of the match. He then extended his lead with another break, and, although he surrendered his own serve straight away, he broke back once more to claim the set.

The second set went with serve until the eighth game when Evans faltered allowing Caruso to break and level the match.

The turning point came in the fourth game of the third set when Evans broke once more. This time he held on to it, saving a break back point in the next game. From there he served out for the match.

Tiafoe Impressive in Win over Sixth Seed

Tiafoe is back on hard courts again, the surface on which he achieved his best ever performance in a Grand Slam by reaching the fourth round of the US Open.

Since then he has been playing on the European clay court circuit, where he endured mixed fortunes. He lost in the second round of the Challenger event in Forli, and was beaten at the first attempt in the French Open by the German, Jan-Lennard Struff.

He, though, won the Challenger event in Parma, Italy, and had high hopes of the Sardinia Open, only to lose to Moutet in the first-round.

He was given a tough first-round draw in Antwerp against the number six seed, Dusan Lajovic of Serbia, but he passed the test with flying colours.

The American secured the first set with two breaks of serve in the fifth and the ninth games.

The second set was more even, with a service break apiece, and it went to a tie-break. The American dropped his serve on the first point, but then hit back, breaking Lajovic twice, and then serving out to seal the win.

Evans v Tiafoe Prediction and Tip

Although Evans is the higher ranked player and has the better head-to-head record, Tiafoe is tipped to win this match based on current form. The American has shown he is able to perform at the top level recently, especially on hard courts, whilst Evans has been struggling.

Tip: Tiafoe to win: 8/11 (bet365)
