Alexander Zverev v John Millman Head to Head
There has been one previous match between Zverev and Millman and the world number seven from Germany had won that one in the first round of the French Open in five sets. This isn’t clay though.

Zverev on a Roll Since Pandemic Return
An opening loss at the Cincinnati Masters aside, Zverev has done what he would have wanted from himself after the return from the pandemic break. A US Open final in which he was leading by two sets could have gone his way, but he shrugged that off to win the title in Cologne last week.
He might have even gone further than the fourth round at the French Open had it not been for his illness – he had flu-like symptoms and probably shouldn’t have played in that match but later tested negative for the virus.
The Cologne win was as easy as it comes. He was tested a tad by Lloyd Harris in the quarterfinal when he lost the second set but came roaring back to win the next five sets in a row to lift the trophy. In the final, he defeated Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets to grab his first title of the year, 12th of his career and fourth indoors.
This will be a good chance to double his tally for the season and warm up nicely for the ATP Finals and first up in his second Cologne campaign is a player featuring in his first tournament since the French Open opening loss.

Millman’s Not Won Successive Matches in a While
It was at the Australian Open earlier this year in January that Millman won back to back matches and made the third round – his joint-best showing at his home major. Since then, however, things have gone rather pear-shaped for the Aussie world number 44.
Millman lost both his next two tournament openers – at Delray Beach and Acapulco – and since his return to tennis from the pandemic break, there have been three first round exits and three second round ousters. In fact coming into this Cologne Open series, Millman had lost back to back matches on clay, going down to Diego Schwartzman in Rome and Pablo Carreno-Busta at the French Open.
Last week, he was shocked by Mischa Zverev in straight sets and one uses the word, ‘shocked’ because it was that kind of a difference between the two players. Millman was 1/4 to win that one but won just five games in the encounter.
Which is why, despite being a bookmakers’ favourite against Fernando Verdasco in his opener here, it would have come as a huge relief for him to come through in straight sets. Facing him in Cologne is the other Zverev this time and unlike the last time he played that surname, Millman is a distant second-favourite here.
Zverev v Millman Prediction and Tip
There is absolutely no surprise in Zverev starting out as a 1/8 favourite to win this one and 3/5 to do that in straight sets. That would be our best call for this match too.
Tip: Zverev to win in straight sets: 3/5 (bet365)
