Diego Schwartzman v Oscar Otte Head to Head

This will be the first match between Schwartzman, ranked ninth and Otte, who is 141st in the world.

Schwartzman Out of Comfort Zone

After a brilliant run at the clay swing earlier this season, Schwartzman will now resume his tennis outside his comfort zone and plays his first tournament indoors this year. The Argentine, who did brilliantly at the Rome Masters and French Open, had a first round bye and will now go into his second round encounter against a player ranked more than 130 places behind him as a heavy favourite.

It comes on a surface though, where Schwartzman has had a mixed record.

Overall, Schwartzman is 17-12 on indoor hard court, with three tournament finals so far. He has lost in each of them but the Argentine’s game has improved over the last couple of years and he might actually be a strong contender here given his recent record.

That record consists of a win over Rafael Nadal on clay in Rome where he made the final and then a semifinal appearance at the French Open where he defeated Dominic Thiem in five sets.

While Schwartzman will need to get back into the groove quickly after switching between clay and indoor hard court, he has an opponent who is himself bit of a clay court specialist and hasn’t found too much success elsewhere.

Otte Withdraws Due to Injury…and is Back!

Oscar Otte had to retire from his qualifying round match against Damir Dzumhur in the very first set but he then recovered enough to make it to the main draw as a lucky loser. And the cherry on top came in the first round of the tournament when he overcame Dennis Novak 6-3, 6-2 in a punishing win.

This gets Otte to his second successive second round appearance in Cologne, having qualified for the same event last week too and won his first round match. There, he had shocked Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets to make the second round before going down to Radu Albot in three sets.

What makes these two victories, one against Struff last week and Novak this week, is they are his first two main draw wins of the year in an ATP tournament. He had begun the season with an underwhelming run at the Challenger circuit, made the final of the Ostrava Challenger, before winning the title at the Aix en Provence challenger.

Those two showings, albeit on clay, would have given him that much confidence to perform at the highest level too. Schwartzman, however, will be a bridge too far to cross for Otte.

Schwartzman v Otte Prediction and Tip

Not much of a surprise to see Schwartzman being an overwhelming favourite here and he is 3/10 to win here. What’s interesting to observe is Otte was 2/1 to win his previous match and begins this one only slightly longer at 5/2.

Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 10/11 (bet365)
