Goffin Looking to Reverse Clay Misfortunes

It’s been a three-match losing streak for Goffin which he would like to reverse coming into this competition in Antwerp. Goffin was knocked out by Denis Shapovalov at the US Open fourth round, conceding a loss from being a set up and followed that up with back to back opening defeats on clay.

He was shocked by Marin Cilic in the first round at the Rome Masters despite having gone into the match at 2/5 to win it, and then was sent packing in his opener at the French Open by Jannik Sinner. Again, he lost in straight sets.

A break of four weeks since that defeat would have allowed Goffin to collect his thoughts as he now embarks on a journey to overturn his poor recent record indoors. Since making back to back finals at the Sofia Open and Rotterdam Open in 2017, and then qualifying for the final of the ATP Finals that year, he has fallen away at both indoor courts and overall in his rankings.

Goffin has won 12 of his 25 matches between 2018 and 2020 on indoor hard courts, including a 3-3 record this year. Can he inch forward in this tournament in his home country and overturn his less than idea season so far?

Giron Needs Three against a 917th-Ranked

USA’s Giron, whose career-best ranking is 90th in the world, made it to the main draw of this event via the qualifying route. He needed three sets against Kamil Majchrzak before a tough two-setter took him to the first round of the tournament.

As luck would have it, Giron was drawn to play wildcard entrant Luca Nardi in his opener. Nardi, 17 years of age and ranked 917th in the world at the moment, was 6/1 going into the match but when he grabbed the first set in the match, a major upset looked to be on the cards.

More so, when the second set went deep without a break of serve.

Giron managed to fight back though, broke Nardi in the ninth game of the set and then completed a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory to seal his place in the second round.

This follow his opening round loss at the hands of Marin Cilic at Cologne last week, and a second round appearance in another indoor tournament he had played in earlier this year at the New York Open.

Goffin v Giron Prediction and Tip

While Goffin might not have shown too much form in recent times, he is facing an opponent who struggled to beat a player ranked outside the top 900. While that is no guarantee of success, Goffin has enough class to get past Giron and to even do that in straight sets.

Tip: Under 9.5 games in the first set: 10/11 (bet365)
