Diego Schwartzman v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Head to Head

This will be the second meeting between Schwartzman and Fokina with the Argentine having won the first in straight sets at this year’s Australian Open.

Schwartzman Claims Oscar

Not that it was expected to any other way but it’s always good for the morale of a player who is expected to win big and does that in the end.

Our consideration that Schwartzman’s opponent Oscar Otte would be able to push the Argentine a tad proved to be totally off the mark too as he won 6-3, 6-2 to seal his quarterfinal berth. That came on the back of a first round bye and with Schwartzman playing his first indoor court encounter of the season.

Schwartzman needed an hour and 19 minutes to come through his opening round match against the lucky loser, breaking Otte thrice and never losing his serve. Things looked to be fairly evenly-poised in the first set when it went to serve till the fifth game before Schwartzman broke Otte to love.

That was all he needed to wrap up the set, and he followed that up with back to back breaks of serve at the start of the second set. Otte managed to hold serve the remaining games but came close to breaking serve just once – in the fourth game – before falling to the world number nine.

His opponent for the quarterfinal will be a slightly stiffer one but with the kind of display on the indoor hard court surface to kick-start the proceedings, Schwartzman’s confidence would be on the rise.

Davidovich Fokina 5-1 Indoors This Year

As if to prove his showing at the Cologne Indoor competition last week was no fluke, Davidovich Fokina has already made it to the quarterfinal in the Cologne 2 tournament. And making it extra special is the manner of victory, with both matches having won in straight sets.

At first, Fokina defeated Bosnia’s Damir Dzhumur before needing a tie-breaker against Steve Johnson to get through to the last eight.

The first set went to serve till the eighth game before Fokina got himself a good chance to serve out the set when he broke Johnson in the ninth game. Johnson retaliated with a break of his own but couldn’t stand up to the constant pressure in the tie-breaker, which he lost 7-3.

The second set looked to be headed in the same direction when the pair exchanged breaks of serve but Fokina got the decisive advantage when he broke the American to love in the eighth game. He soon served it out to reach his second successive quarterfinal in Cologne, having made the last four last week too.

Overcoming Schwartzman to make it two semifinals in a row would a special kind of a feather in his cap though.

Schwartzman v Davidovich Fokina Prediction and Tip

Despite Fokina’s fine fettle, Schwartzman looks like he was never away from tennis and that it didn’t make much of a difference whether he was playing on his favourite clay or indoor hard court. And that is what will keep him a favourite to win in straight sets here.

Tip: Schwartzman to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
