Victoria Azarenka v Aryna Sabalenka Head to Head

This will be the third meeting between the two players.

They each have one win against each other. Aryna Sabalenka’s win came in the first round of the 2019 US Open. Victoria Azarenka’s victory is the more recent one. She won in straight sets in the second round of the 2020 Us Open, that win paving her way to the final.

Additionally, both their meetings have been on hard courts.

Azarenka Looking to ‘Win’ Her First Final of The Year

This will be Victoria Azarenka’s third final this year. She, however, played only one of those finals. In the western and Southern Open, Naomi Osaka pulled her hamstring and was forced to withdraw from the tournament, giving the Belarusian a walkover win. That may have been a bittersweet moment, but it was Azarenka’s first title since the 2016 Miami Open.

As fate would have it, the two were to meet again: this time in the Us Open. Naomi Osaka was fit and fought to come from behind to win the match and the grand slam title. Now Azarenka has another chance to prove that she really is title worthy and finally win a title this year by battling it out on the court.

Her performances so far have shown that she really is so. Her first match in the second round is the only one where she struggled for a bit and that was only in the tie’s first set. Since losing that first set 6-2 to Barbora Krejcikova, she’s won all her other sets, only conceding an average of two games per set in the process.

In her most recent semifinal win, she showed her dominance by winning her first five games against Maria Sakkari and never looked back from that moment. She won the first set 6-1 comfortably and was only broken once in the second set to round off the tie 6-3.

She’ll now play in the 40th final of her career, and is in some good resurgent form which has seen her win 18 of her last 21 matches; a great positive that she can carry into the final.

Sabalenka’s Rocky Road to the Final

Sabalenka will be chasing her second title of the year when she meets with Azarenka on Sunday. She’s had a rockier road in the tournament. Her first match against Cori Gauff went to an anxious third-set tiebreaker, and her quarterfinal against Sara Sorribes Tormo saw her achieve an incredible comeback.

In fact, after losing the first set to the Spaniard, she was down 4-0 in the second set before winning ten games in a row to win both the second and third sets.

She came in as the underdog in her semifinal against Jennifer Brady but rode her momentum to win in less nervy conditions this time.

Sabalenka avoided another sluggish start and got going early against Lexington champion Brady, blasting 22 winners and converting 100% of her break opportunities which helped her to record a 6-4, 6-4 victory which earned her a place in the final.

Despite being seeded third, she comes in to the final as the bookies’ underdog. Having been down many times before and written off, she’ll want to prove that she can definitely handle the pressure as she chases a seventh career title against her compatriot.

Azarenka v Sabalenka Prediction and Tip

Azarenka may have a slight edge in this one, and at 1/2 could be another good choice, but I do expect it to be a nervy affair as all finals often tend to be, especially since Sabalenka has another final in doubles later on. There could also be some great value in the games market, but for now, I’ll stick to my belief that the match will go all the way.

Tip: Match to have three sets: 6/4 (bet365)
