Alex de Minaur v Ugo Humbert Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between De Minaur and Humbert in competitive tennis.

De Minaur Scrapes Through to the Final

De Minaur was up a break, then down a break before taking Grigor Dimitrov to the first set tie-breaker which he went on to win. The second set was as close after the Aussie came back from a break down to push the set into a tie-breaker only to lose it 7-3.

The final set looked to be headed to a photo-finish as both players held their serves till the sixth game when De Minaur broke Dimitrov to draw first blood. Dimitrov found his mojo and retaliated with a break to love of his own but it was in the ninth game of the final set which ended the contest.

The Aussie was able to break his opponent in that game, converting his only break-point that game before he served it out – a tad shakily if I could add – to clinch the match and move into the seventh ATP final of his career.

All previous six finals have come on hard court surfaces, with three of them resulting in a win for de Minaur. All three victories had come in 2019.

Humbert in the Second Career Final

It was nearly the end of Humbert in the tournament. Down a set, he looked to have pulled himself together when he took a 3-0 lead in the second set, but then saw his lead disappear as Daniel Evans pushed the set into a tie-breaker.

There, Humbert was down 6-3 at one stage, before he saved all three match-points only to fall behind another one at 6-7. He saved another match-point before coming back to win the tie-breaker, level the set and take an early 2-0 lead in the third.

He had three more break-points to double that advantage and while Evans saved all of them there was no looking back for the now-confident Auckland Open champion as he went of to wrap up the three hour and 14 minute long contest in three.

This follows Kimmer Coppejans, Pablo Carreni Busta and Lloyd Harris in the previous three rounds that he played.

Humbert has reached just one previous ATP final which came earlier this year in Auckland, a tournament he went on to win.

De Minaur v Humbert Prediction and Tip

It looks to be a match between two gritty players, or at least players who have shown that quality in their semifinals and that could mean we could see both go toe to toe yet again to try and usurp the other. De Minaur has the edge here but might need three sets to come through.

Tip: De Minaur to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
