Alexander Zverev v Diego Schwartzman Head to Head

This will be the fourth meeting between the two players.

Diego Schwartzman brings a 2-1 head-to-head advantage coming into this match. He won their last meeting in the US Open last year; that win coming on a hard court. Additionally, he won their first-ever meeting in Kitzbuhel in 2014 on a clay court.

Alexander Zverev’s only win over Schwartzman came in the 2018 Paris Masters on an indoor hard court.

Zverev One Win Away From Cologne Double

Local favorite Alexander Zverev will be chasing his second title in Cologne in as many weeks. He made short work of Auger-Aliassime in the final of the Cologne Open’s first edition to win that tournament, earning him his first title of the year.

He now has 12 ATP titles in his career, a stupendous achievement for any player, let alone a 23-year-old with more than a decade of tennis left in him.

On Sunday he’ll be chasing his thirteenth title—a fourth on home soil—and though he hasn’t been as ruthless as he had been in the previous tournament, he’s still done a lot to possibly earn him another title.

In his first match, he was forced to three sets by Australian John Millman after losing the second set. That was followed by another three-setter against Adrian Mannarino, and his recent win over Jannik Sinner was his first straight sets win of the tournament, something that he achieved in all but one of his matches in the previous edition of the Cologne Open.

Still, Sinner gave the German a run for his money, especially in the first set. The Italian wild card started strongly and broke Zverev early on to get a 4-1 lead. The German came back after capitalizing on a seventh game break point, and they carried on to an eventual tiebreaker which Zverev subsequently won.

The World No. 7, however, shone in the second set. He closed the match in fine form on serve as he won 82 percent of first-serve points in the second set, which helped him earn a win and avenge his most recent loss at Roland Garros to Jannik Sinner.

Additionally, he’s now 7-0 on indoor hard courts for the year. With his great run of form that has seen him win 16 of his last 18 matches, he should be perfectly poised to make it 8-0 and notch another title on Sunday.

Schwartzman 0-2 in Finals This Year

Schwartzman endured a tough tie against Canadian youngster Félix Auger-Aliassime to reach the Cologne Open final.

This will be his third final of the year after he reached finals in the Cordoba Open and the Italian Open but ultimately lost on both occasions, something he’ll be determined to rectify this time.

However, his run in the tournament has been a rather shaky one. Though he might have started strong in his second-round match against Oscar Otte, he had to pull off a miracle in the quarterfinal against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

At one point he was trailing Fokina 2-6, 2-5, but he battled back to win his second and third set. Fokina even served for the match on three occasions and held match point at 5-2, but was unable to convert and gave the Argentine an opportune moment to come back, which he then did.

In the semis against a rallying Auger-Aliassime, he had to quash fears of a comeback after letting the second set slip following a dominant first-set display. The Canadian broke him twice him decisively in the second set, which then took the match to a pivotal third set.

His resoluteness, however, pushed him through, which helped him break the Canadian twice. He also rescued two break points in the last game of the set and won it 6-4.

Still in prime position for the ATP Finals in London, a win here in the final will surely push him closer. He had begun the week in the ninth and final qualification position in the ATP Battle for London, 105 points ahead of 10th placed Matteo Berrettini.

But on a surface that he struggles a lot on, and against a local favorite who seems to be relishing his magnificent form, it’s hard seeing anything for the Argentine in this fixture.

Zverev v Schwartzman Prediction and Tip

Schwartzman may give Zverev a hard time, but the German seems to be in prime position to replicate his title win from a week ago. Additionally, the tough semifinal against Auger-Aliassime may have worn the Argentine out, which may play to Zverev’s favor.

Tip: Alexander Zverev to win: 1/2 (bet365)
