Stefanos Tsitsipas v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head

Tsitsipas leads the series 3-2, having won their most recent match in the quarterfinals of the Dubai Championships this February. Three of their five meetings before this have gone the distance, and surprisingly it is the German who holds a 2-1 head-to-head lead.

Tsitsipas Returns After Minor Leg Injury

Stefanos Tsitsipas pushed world no.1 Novak Djokovic right down to the wire in their French Open semifinal encounter earlier this month. But the Greek’s exertions came at the expense of a minor leg injury which turned out to be more serious than initial diagnosis.

Following an MRI scan and on the advice of his doctor, he withdrew from St. Petersburg and decided to take a week off to prepare for the Erste Bank Open in Vienna where he will make his debut appearance at the event.

In spite of that defeat to Djokovic in Paris, Tsitsipas successfully qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals for the second year in a row, guaranteeing him the opportunity to defend his crown in London.

He also became the first player in 11 years to reach at least two Grand Slam semifinals before the age of 23 (the last man to do so, Juan Martin Del Potro in 2009).

After Vienna, the 22-year-old will make stops at the Paris Masters and London, with all of those tournaments held indoors. Five of Tsitsipas’ six career titles have come on that surface, so do not rule him out to add another one in the next few weeks to his growing trophy cabinet.

Worrying Signs For Struff After Cologne Shockers

Jan-Lennard Struff played remarkably well in the North American bubble, advancing to his first Masters 1000 quarterfinal of his career at the Western & Southern Open, and making the third round of the US Open a week later. But he had the misfortune of landing in Djokovic’s way both times, and was knocked out in straight sets by the Serbian star who extended his winning sequence against the German to 5-0.

Nevertheless, it is not matches against Djokovic and the elite group that should be a barometer of where Struff’s game is at. After all, he has secured eight top-10 wins in his career, with six of those coming since the start of last season.

Struff peaked at a career-high world no.29 after New York, but he fared dismally on the clay courts, scoring a single win across Rome, Hamburg and the French Open.

While he was expected to make deep runs on his return to hard courts in Cologne 1 & 2, he was just not at the races. His serve deteriorated, and his forehand which is his other big weapon malfunctioned.

In Cologne 1, he lost to countryman Oscar Otte in straight sets, a player ranked over 100 places below him in the rankings and who had not won a tour-level match all year.

The world no.31 did return to winning ways in Cologne 2, beating Marco Cecchinato for the loss of four games, but the residual rust in his game was evident as he fell to Yoshihito Nishioka in the second round.

Tsitsipas v Struff Prediction and Tip

If Struff is able to turn it on, he is very much capable of prying open the Tsitsipas defense. But at the moment the German does not instill confidence of putting up a decent run of form. His serve has been nonexistent, and he is leaking far too many errors to stay consistent.

Tip: Tsitsipas to win in straight sets: 10/11 (bet365)
