Stan Wawrinka v Cristain Garin Head to Head
This will be the second meeting between the players. Wawrinka won their only meeting at the 2019 French Open, dropping five games in total

Swiss Looking For Improved Performance
After his return from a long injury lay-off, 2019 saw a steadily improving Stan Wawrinka. As 2020 started, Wawrinka looked like getting back to his best. A semi-final at Doha was followed by quarter-final appearances at both the Australian Open and the Acapulco ATP 500.
The 2015 French Open champion did not have the best return to clay on the main tour, with an opening round loss in Rome to Lorenzo Musetti, the rising Italian teenager. However, he got his French Open campaign off to a thunderous start with a very convincing win against former world number one Andy Murray. After looking good for a deep run at the French Open, the Swiss lost in a five set tussle with little known Frenchman Hugo Gaston in the third round.
Wawrinka started his St. Petersburg Open campaign with tricky matches going to deciders against Dan Evans and Evgeny Donskoy, before eventually losing in the quarter-finals to the rising Canadian Denis Shapovalov.
Back in Vienna, the Swiss will be looking for a good outing, in what is likely to be his penultimate tournament of 2020, and hoping for a deep run, assisted by more consistent levels of play than we have seen this Fall.

Garin Yet To Impress Outside Clay
2019 was a breakthrough year for Chile’s young Cristian Garin. The 23-year-old depicted his strong skills on clay, winning two ATP titles at Houston and Munich and being a runner-up in Bavaria. 2020 seemed to be following a similar, if not better route as he performed well during the LatAm clay swing winning titles at both Cordoba and Rio, before the Covid-19 season pause.
Upon his return to the tour, the Chilean continued his success on clay, being a semi-finalist at the Hamburg Open losing out to Stefanos Tsitsipas. A good start to the French Open ended in a third round loss to Karen Khachanov and Garin now returns to the indoor faster surfaces looking for means to redeem his season.
Not a force on the faster surfaces, Garin will be looking to leverage off his strong groundstrokes on either wing and improve his results and increase in confidence on the non-clay surfaces.
Wawrinka v Garin Prediction and Tip
Both players have failed to get to the levels of consistency that they would like and will be looking to end 2020 on a strong note. It can be a tricky encounter, but Wawrinka’s superior experience and strength on the surface should see him through in a decider.
Tip: Wawrinka to win in three sets: 11/4 (bet365)
