Thiem Made to Work In Opener

Dominic Thiem is both the home favorite and defending champion here in Vienna, having won the title last year against Diego Schwartzman in a tight final set in the championship match. While Thiem has been known to be a clay specialist, his results in the last 12 months have shown him to be more than capable on the hard and indoor surfaces too.

While the Austrian has got the monkey off his back by finally breaking through as a new Grand Slam winner in a Big Three era, there will be the added pressure and expectation from him, as he will now be looked upon differently by many, having won a major. Some of this pressure and fatigue was clearly evident at the French Open, where he lost in the quarter-finals against Diego Schwartzman

The number two seed this week returned to the tour after a short break after the French Open, using the time to recharge his batteries and then build up the practice sessions gradually.  Initially scheduled to play Kei Nishikori in the opener, Thiem was informed the night before that the Japanese had withdrawn and his opponent would be Vitaliy Sachko of Ukraine.

Off to a strong start and leading 5-1 in the first set, Thiem blinked a little and the Ukranian broke and fought back with the number two seed eventually clinching the set 6-4.

Up a break early in the second set, Thiem again lost his concentration and got broken back. Sachko stayed in the second set pushing Thiem on his service games and managing to hold his own serve. At 5-6 in the set on the Sachko set, the Austrian played two of the best points of the day finally prevailing 7-5 in the second.

As the road gets more difficult, Thiem plays Chilean Cristian Garin in the next round.

Promising But Tight Win For Garin v Wawrinka

The 23-year-old Chirs Garin depicted his strong skills in 2019 on clay, winning two ATP titles at Houston and Munich and being a runner-up in Bavaria. 2020 seemed to be following a similar, if not better route as he performed well during the LatAm clay swing winning titles at both Cordoba and Rio, before the Covid-19 season pause.

A semi-final on the Hamburg clay was followed by an uninspiring third route ouster at Roland Garros.

Starting as the underdog in his opener against Stan Wawrinka, Garin was off the blocks quickly and claimed the first set 6-4 with the one break of serve. A much closer second set followed that went into the tie-break, and Wawrinka finally prevailed 11-9 in the tiebreak. An early break in the final set was sufficient for Garin to close the decideer 6-3.

Making his presence felt outside of clay, Garin will be well aware that the next challenge against Thiem will be an even more difficult one and he will need to be ever ready to move further this week.

Thiem v Garin Prediction and Tip

Both players are still looking to get their footing after the French Open, and while both won their openers, neither looked in total control. While Garin prevailed against an opponent as difficult as Wawrinka, Thiem was a little unsettled by the change in opponent from Nishikor to one he did not know much about.

A good match on the cards; expect Thiem to prevail in two tight sets.

Tip: Thiem to win in straight sets: 2/5 (bet365)
