Adrian Mannarino v Yuichi Sugita Head to Head

There have been five previous matches between these two across all levels an Mannarino leads 3-2. At the highest level, it’s 3-1 for Mannarino with Sugita having won one of his matches at the Challenger tier way back in 2012.

Interestingly, all the remaining four matches between them came in 2017, of which two were on grass including the final of the Antalya Open which Sugita had won. That remains Sugita’s only career ATP title.

Mannarino Shows Spark in Cologne

Wins over Alexei Popyrin and Miomir Kecmanovic in the first two rounds of the Cologne Open last week, which was also played on the indoor court surfaces brought Mannarino to his only ATP quarterfinal of the season.

There, while he lost to the eventual champion Alexander Zverev, he put up a solid showing before going down in three sets. Zverev looked in trouble at one stage, unable to break through Mannarino’s defences, before finally getting a solitary break in the final set.

That run also broke a string of five successive defeats for Mannarino that had begun in the third round of the US Open. Interestingly, even there, it was Zverev who had beaten him in a four sets, of which Mannarino had won one in a tie-breaker – similar to Cologne.

Mannarino’s indoor record isn’t the best, but he does have a Monaterrey Challenger title under his belt this year. Can he now overcome his Japanese opponent here to make it to his second successive quarterfinal, albeit one with a first round bye?

Sugita Breaks the Duck

In the seven ATP tournaments Sugita played since his Pune Open quarterfinal, he hadn’t won a single main draw match. Sure, there were a one Challenger competition in which he made it to quarterfinal too but overall, his struggles have been profound and his ranking has fallen from 81st in the world to its current 101st.

Which is why when Sugita finally qualified for the main draw of the tournament and then defeated Damir Dzumhur in the first round of this Astana Open, it would have been a cause for some celebration.

The win didn’t come easy either despite running away with the first set 6-1 which he achieved thanks to two breaks of serve. In the second, he was up a break and that elusive main draw win looked close but Dzumhur broke back to level it at 4-4 and then made it his second break as Sugita served to stay in the set at 5-6.

The two exchanged early breaks of serve to take them to 2-2 before a decisive break in the fifth game allowed Sugita to serve for the match at 5-4. There he faced two break-points but quickly erased both of them before winning it in three.

Mannarino v Sugita Prediction and Tip

Mannarino should win this – and he is a strong favourite here at 3/10 – but whether he can do it in double-quick time or not is the question. We think Sugita will put up a fight here, but Mannarino will go through.

Tip: Mannarino to win in three sets: 11/4 (bet365)
