Rublev 15-1 after Gombos Rout
All it took was 60 minutes for Rublev to flex his muscles in his opening round match at this Vienna Open, defeating Norbert Gombos 6-3, 6-2. He won three breaks of serve in the match, dropping his serve not even once and finished off his qualifying opponent in a manner not too dissimilar from those he had in recent times.
That was his 15th win in his fourth tournament, to go with just one defeat – a French Open quarterfinal defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas – and it brings up even closer to qualification for the ATP Finals to be played in London next month.
Rublev, who has won five titles this season including the Hamburg Open and the St. Petersburg Open since the resumption of tennis, is also 8-1 on indoor hard-courts this year. His only defeat on this surface came to Filip Krajinovic in the quarterfinal of the Rotterdam Open.
He started off in a hurried fashion in his match against Gombos, breaking his opponent in the very second game before consolidating that with easy holds throughout the set. The second set proved to be even easier with the breaks of serve coming in the third and seventh game before Rublev served it out in the eighth to complete a straight-set victory.
In Sinner, Rublev has an opponent who has quietly climbed up to the 43rd in the world after being 82nd at one stage this year and 553rd last year. As rise in rankings go, Sinner’s is one of the best in recent times.

Sinner’s Turnaround as Stunning as Rublev’s Season
At the start of the 2019 season, Sinner was playing on the Futures circuit ranked a 500th-something player in the world.
He featured his first Challenger of the year in Bergamo indoors in February of last year and went on to win the title, but it wasn’t till April he participated in his first ATP tournament, in Budapest on clay. A string of early defeats on the ATP circuit followed before his first solid run at the Antwerp Open – also indoors.
A semifinalist at that tournament, Sinner went on to win the ATP Next Gen Final to announce himself to the world.
Despite the sharp improvement in his ranking last year, it has been his performances this season which have screamed out ‘talent’ to the tennis world. A quarterfinal at Rotterdam, a third round at Rome and then his best showing in a Grand Slam – a quarterfinal at the French Open – have all added to the growing phenomenon by the name of Sinner.
And with another semifinal at Cologne last week, it wasn’t much of a surprise Sinner started off as a favourite against an equally talented youngster Casper Ruud in the first round here. Sinner routed Ruud 7-6, 6-3 to seal his second round berth but will now be up against a player who looks to be second only to Novak Djokovic as far as his form goes.
Rublev v Sinner Prediction and Tip
Rublev the most obvious favourite but given Sinner’s solidity indoors, we give him a good chance of upsetting the apple-cart. Backing Sinner to win a set here.
Tip: Sinner to win a set – Yes: 4/6 (bet365)
