John Millman v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head

Four previous matches between Millman and Tiafoe are tied at 2-2 with Millman leading 2-1 on hard courts and Tiafoe having won one on grass. Their latest match came in the second round of the US Open with the American edging the contest in five sets.

Millman Wins ‘Twists with Tommy’

It was a quarterfinal contest that could well be rechristened as Twists with Tommy. Millman carved out a comeback win in a three-set match which saw two of them go into tie-breakers and including multiple twists and turns.

The Aussie, who had earlier got himself a first round bye and then cruised past Fernando Verdasco, had the early initiative when he broke to lead 3-1 in the opening set. Little did he know, however, that was the first of multiple twists on show in the match.

Paul broke back in the fifth game, then did that again in the ninth to serve for the set only to lose the next game and the set went into a tie-breaker. The tie-breaker wasn’t without drama either, as Paul overturned a 2-4 deficit to clinch the set.

Millman retaliated with two breaks of serve in the second set, and while he dropped his own serve once, the buffer of the extra break helped him through to level the match.

The biggest drama came in the final set when Paul was up a break on two separate occasion, leading 2-0 and 5-2, only to be broken soon after. The second of those breaks came while he was serving for the match, which brought the encounter to its second tie-breaker which saw its biggest stunner.

Paul looked to have taken full control of the tie-breaker when he broke Millman twice to take a 5-0 lead only to blow it away and lose seven points in a row! Millman, who had lost to Roger Federer at the Australian Open from a similar situation, had carved a win out from an improbable one for himself.

Tiafoe Wards off Gerasimov

While Tiafoe had to face a three-setter of his own, and that came with its own thrill there weren’t as many twists on the way. Tiafoe took the first set in a tie-breaker after neither player managed to carve out a break of serve, before Gerasimov made the early move in the second to go 2-0 up.

He had a chance to serve for the set at 5-4 only to drop it in a longish game, but Tiafoe was broken yet again in the 11th game. This time around, Gerasimov held on, albeit a tad shakily to level the match at a set apiece.

The third went to serve till 3-3 before the pair exchanged a break apiece. Tiafoe then held on to lead 6-5 but when it was Gerasimov’s chance to do the same and push the match into another final set tie-breaker, he lost his nerve, and his serve to lose the set 7-5.

Tiafoe had earlier beaten Corentin Moutet and Miomir Kecmanovic in straight sets to move into the quarterfinal.

Millman v Tiafoe Prediction and Tip

This won’t be an easy one to call but we reckon Tiafoe’s recent form and his younger legs should help him edge the contest. Looking at a three-setter too.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
