Felix Auger-Aliassime v Marin Cilic Head to Head

In their only previous meeting Cilic had defeated Auger-Aliassime at the Washington Open last year. That was a straight-set, 6-3, 6-4 win for the Croat.

Auger-Aliassime to Shrug off Vienna Shock

A finalist at the Cologne Open where he came close to winning his first ever ATP title and then a semifinalist in the same city the following week, you would have expected Auger-Aliassime to do well indoors at Vienna too.

Probably it was a case of too many tournaments in succession but the sharpness had gone missing by the time Auger-Aliassime had reached Austria. And in the first round there, he went down to Vasek Pospisil, despite having been an overwhelming favourite to win that opener.

Which might have come as a blessing for the Canadian as it gives him some more time to prepare himself for a Masters tournament on what has been his favourite surface this year. Four his five semifinal appearances have all been indoors and all three finals have been on the same surface.

Unfortunately for the Canadian, he hasn’t been able to break his duck as far as winning a title is concerned. What he has also not done before this is play a match at the Paris Masters which means he could well be on the verge of breaking a different duck here – that of winning his first match at this tournament.

Challenging him is the former Grand Slam champion but a fading star Marin Cilic.

Cilic in Need of a Turnaround

At 32, Cilic is no spring chicken but this is also an era where tennis players go on to play for many more years than has been the case in previous eras. And Cilic will believe he still has the potential to take on and defeat the best despite what this season has been for him.

Make no mistake, there have been third round appearances at both, the US Open and the Rome Masters but beyond that Cilic has seen a few more early exits. An opener at the Cincinnati Masters, another one at the French Open and a third at the Cologne Open two weeks ago have all been confidence-denting losses for the for the former US Open winner.

Just a few weeks before the world went into a pause because of the pandemic, Cilic had made it to the fourth round though beating Roberto Bautista-Agut, a top 10 player. And that is the kind of result Cilic needs to be draw inspiration from coming into this tournament as he looks to end the season on a high.

As things stand though, his recent results might not fill him up with a lot of confidence and he starts off as a second favourite here.

Auger-Aliassime v Cilic Prediction and Tip

Auger-Aliassime is 1/2 to win this while Cilic starts off at 6/4 to surprise his younger opponent. We have to go with the Canadian who might even be a favourite to swoop this in straight sets.

Tip: Auger-Aliassime to win: 1/2 (bet365)
