Jan-Lennard Struff v Nikoloz Basilashvili Head to Head
This will be the fifth meeting between the two players.
They are currently tied 2-2 on head-to-head meetings. Jan-Lennard Struff’s two wins came in the 2013 Bergamo Challenger on an indoor hard court, and most recently in the 2020 Dubai Tennis Championships on a hard court. Both of those were straight sets wins, with Basilashvili forced to retire in the second set of their 2013 meeting.
On the other hand, Nikoloz Basilashvili’s two wins came in the 2019 Canadian Open on a hard court, and in the 2016 Heilbronn Challenger on a clay court.

Tough Year For Struff
Struff peaked at number 29 this year after a decent showing in the Cincinnati Masters, in which he was knocked out in the quarters by eventual champion Novak Djokovic, but that remains to be his only good result for the year to date.
He might have made it to the third round of the Us Open shortly after, but since then he’s juggled between first and second-round elimination. In his past six tournaments, he’s been knocked out in the first round in four of them. Additionally, early elimination in the French, Italian, and Hamburg European Open on a surface that he would have been expected to perform better on has thrown major doubts on his shaky form.
This year, however, clay has been his worst-performing surface, with only one win to show for the entire tour. He has a 10-6 record on hard courts, 1-3 on Clay, and 3-4 on indoor hard courts. So it might do him some good to keep off the clay, which he has ever since he was humiliated by fellow countryman Daniel Altmaier in the French Open. Maybe the indoor hard courts of Paris may offer him a chance of season-ending redemption.
Yet, despite all this, he comes into the match as the undisputed favorite. The only reason this is so is because he’s coming up against someone who is in career-ending form.

Basilashvili The Shell Of A Former Champion
Three-time ATP winner Basilashvili is stuck in a revolving rut. The Georgian is suffering one of the worst runs of his career. Since the season resumed after the pandemic break, he has played seven matches—including one qualifier—and lost all of them, failing to win a set in any of those losses.
Even on his favored clay, one which he’s won two of his titles on, he’s still struggled to reach his previous heights. On hard and indoor hard courts, it should be even worse for him. The fast pace of the court has made him more prone to errors, which have been evident in his most recent performances, and that seems set to continue in his upcoming first-round match.
And unlike last year when he was on a similar free fall that he managed to overturn, this year there’s been no signs of revival, and Struff should be able to put the final nail in Basilashvili’s season.
Struff v Basilashvili and Tip
This seems like a relatively easy pick. Basilashvili’s dire form guarantees that this tie only has one direction: A Struff win. Additionally, Basilashvili has lost his last seven matches in straight sets, and Struff should easily be fancied to make that eight in a row.
Tip: Struff to win in straight sets: 4/6 (bet365)
