Ramos-Vinolas Hoping to Make a Late Form Reversal

For a player who did not make it to the main draw of this tournament over the last couple of seasons and has never gone beyond the second round, this represents a great opportunity to at least level his best showing ever. That’s because Ramos-Vinolas is playing a qualifier, ranked 40 places behind him in this opener at Paris.

Then again, Ramos-Vinolas will have to overturn his especially underwhelming form so far this season.

Right from the time he featured in his first tournament after the pandemic break, the Spaniard has won just two matches, but at the same time lost seven in the process. More recently, he recorded those only two wins – the first at the French Open and then at the Sardinia Open – but both came on clay.

On other surfaces, the struggle has been real for Ramos-Vinolas, who has opted to focus on his favourite clay instead of looking to spread too thin. He is coming off a first round loss at the Antwerp Open but more importantly, the Spaniard lost to Zizou Bergs, a player ranked 455th in the world.

Can he show some late surge?

Giron Good Indoors This Season

Having played at the New York Open earlier this year and made second round, Giron has pushed on much further indoors than he has anywhere else and comes into the Paris Masters on the back of a quarterfinal at the Antwerp Open.

At the same tournament where Ramos-Vinolas was dumped out by a player ranked outside the top 400, Giron made it through the qualifiers and then beat a couple of opponents to reach the last eight.

In the quarterfinals, he went down to Alex de Minaur but the confidence from that result looked to have rubbed on rather well on him as he defeated Roberto Carballes Baena and Laslo Djere in the qualifiers here to make the main draw.

Giron, a late bloomer, having reached his career best ranking of 86th last week, will be quietly confident now despite playing an opponent so much more experienced than him and a few notches higher in the ranking. Can the American win just his fourth career match at a Masters tournament?
