Marin Cilic v Corentin Moutet Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the Australian Open earlier this year when Cilic was a straight-set winner over Moutet in the first round of that tournament.

Cilic Rides Past Auger-Aliassime

The Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime was the finalist at the Cologne Open and followed it up with a semifinal in the tournament played in the same city the following week. For some reason, however, he dropped form and went out in the first round of the Vienna Open, and that looked to have sapped a lot of confidence out from the world number 21.

Add that to the inspired play from Cilic and we are looking at how the opening round match between the two transpired.

Cilic ran away to a stunning start, breaking Auger-Aliassime thrice to win the set 6-0. The second set started on a quiet note with both players holding serve till the fifth game before Auger-Aliassime finally broke through. While Cilic broke back, he dropped serve yet again in what turned out to be a long eighth game before Auger-Aliassime served out the set.

The Canadian’s joy was short-lived. While he held on to his serve in the first two games of the third set, Cilic broke him in the sixth game to 15 and then served it out in the ninth game of the set to win the match in three.

The first set bagel will help the Croat rebuild his own confidence, which wasn’t at its peak following a 1-3 record over the past four matches before this.

Moutet Breaks Losing Run

After going three matches without a win and with a 1-5 win-loss record over the six matches leading into the opener here in Paris, all eyes were on the Frenchman Moutet as he took on Salvatore Caruso in this first round match.

On paper he was a favourite but only just and as we had expected, the match into a third set to decide its winner. Moutet overcame the loss of the first set and then staved off five break points in the opening game of the second before mounting a comeback.

A cagey second set went into a tie-breaker with neither player getting broken but Moutet regained control to take a 5-0 lead in it. He eventually won the tie-breaker 7-2.

The third set began in fine style for the now-confident Moutet who broke Caruso in successive games to take a 4-1 lead. And while the Italian managed a break back, Moutet completed the final rites with a 6-3 victory after breaking his opponent yet again.

This was Moutet’s first victory indoors this season and he now equals his best performance at the Paris Masters which he had achieved last season too. He had earlier also made it to his maiden ATP final at the Qatar Open only to lose to Andrey Rublev in straight sets.

Cilic v Moutet Prediction and Tip

With a win of the nature he achieved, Cilic would be a favourite to win this and move into the third round. For a slightly riskier option, you could look at Cilic in three.

Tip: Cilic to win: 1/2 (bet365)
