Pablo Carreño Busta v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head
This will be the sixth meeting between the two players.
Pablo Carreño Busta currently leads 3-2 on head-to-head meetings. He won their most recent fixture, which came in the 2019 Hamburg European Open. Additionally, he also defeated Jan-Lennard Struff in the 2016 Winston-Salem Open and the 2014 edition of the Monte-Carlo Masters.
Jan-Lennard Struff’s two wins came in the 2019 ATP Auckland Open and in a 2015 Szczecin Challenger.
With regards to surfaces, Carreño Busta has defeated Struff twice on clay and once on a hard court. Struff, on the other hand, has defeated the Spaniard once on a hard court and once on a clay court.

Spaniard Carreño Busta recovered from an early-set setback to win his first-round match against 161st ranked Hugo Gaston.
He found himself 2-0 down after being broken in the match’s first game. He recovered and won the next five games, rescuing a game from break point and breaking the French player twice in that five-game winning streak.
With that drive, the second set proved to be smooth sailing for him. He broke Gaston thrice, taking the set 6-2 with some relative ease, pushing his win record to 18-11 for the season so far.
He now walks into the second round of the Paris Masters but has never been able to make it past this round in his previous five main draw attempts. He reached that stage in 2016 and 2017, only to suffer elimination on both occasions.
His struggles on indoor courts have also been evident. He has a 4-4 record for the year and a 31-34 record in total, which only pales to his statistics on grass courts.
But he should be confident of finally getting past the second round in Paris, as he’s meeting with a player who’s had a recent bad run of form prior to this tournament.

Struff’s Second Win In Six
Jan-Lennard Struff defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-4 6-2 to win his second match in six matches. He’d entered the tie as a 1/10 favorite against a player who was 0-16 in his last 16 sets but quickly found himself in a bit of trouble. He failed to capitalize on two break points in the first game and suddenly found himself 3-1 down after being broken twice.
In the fifth game, he again failed to capitalize on two break points, and this time found himself 4-1 down. This is when the resurgence began. He rallied and won five games in a row, breaking Georgian Basilashvili twice and rescuing a break point in the process, which gave him the first set in some great style.
That momentum carried him forth into the second set. He broke his opponent thrice and coolly won the set 6-2. His strong serve also helped him through, as he achieved a 90% first serve rate in the match and accumulated 13 aces in the process.
That win should be a major reliever for him, especially since his last good run was in August in the Cincinnati Masters, in which he made it to the quarters and was knocked out by eventual champion Novak Djokovic.
He’ll be hoping to replicate that first-round performance against another title winner in Carreño Busta.
Carreño Busta v Struff Prediction and Tip
Though the seed might be the favorite in this one, I expect Struff to offer some sort of resistance and manipulate Carreño Busta’s frailties on indoor hard courts. Therefore, I expect the match to be a hard-fought one decided in three sets.
