Wawrinka Overcomes Evans But Form an Issue

When Wawrinka won the Prague Challenger earlier this post-pandemic season, the hope was he would translate that form into some of the top tournaments on the ATP circuit as well. Unfortunately for the former Grand Slam winner, life hasn’t been as rosy.

A first round defeat at the Rome Masters followed soon after and while he made it to the third round at the French Open, he followed that with up a 2-2 record on indoor hard courts before the Paris Masters.

Wawrinka still went into his opening round match against Dan Evans as a strong favourite and the good news for him is he lived up to those odds. It turned out to be a cagey affair against the Brit but in the end, it seemed like Wawrinka’s superior experience held him in a better stead than his opponent.

The Swiss earned a break in the fourth game of the first set and that’s all he needed throughout the match. He wrapped up the first set 6-3 and while he found it difficult to get through the Evans serve in the second set, Wawrinka managed to hold tight in the tie-breaker.

He will still want something better from himself as far as form goes and what better than to test it out against a youngster coming into the tournament having shown enough talent in the recent past.

Paul Overturns Simon Start

America’s world number 55 Paul was down a set in his opening match against Frenchman Gilles Simon but he overturned that to complete a three-set win in the first round. And it was a match where fortunes fluctuated quite regularly.

Paul, for instance, broke Simon in the very game of the match but then capitulated in the fourth to drop his serve to love to the Frenchman. Simon went on to break Paul for the second time to wrap up the set 6-3.

A break of serve in the sixth game is all that Paul needed to level things back, but the real drama came in the final set. Simon looked to grabbed the early initiative when he took a 3-0 lead after breaking Paul in the second game. Little did he know at that stage, he had won his last game of the match.

Paul went on a six-game winning rampage, breaking his opponent on three successive serves to complete a solid victory.

Wawrinka v Paul Prediction and Tip

This might not be a straightforward win for Wawrinka who might have to show a lot of resilience to get past Paul. Three setter looks likely.

Tip: Three sets in the match:6/4 (bet365)
