Pablo Carreno Busta v Norbert Gombos Head to Head

These two have played twice, once at the Challengers and the second time on the ATP circuit. Interestingly Carreno-Busta had won the first time on clay in 2013, while Gombos managed to shock him in Montpellier in the first round earlier this year.

That match at the Montpellier Open was played on indoor hard courts.

Carreno Busta Wins an Even Battle

There was nothing to choose between Carreno Busta and his second round opponent Jan-Lennard Struff when the two met on Tuesday but it turned out to be a reasonably straightforward win for the former.

Sure, Struff managed to push Carreno Busta to a tie-breaker in the first set, in turn managing to hold serve throughout but the Spaniard proved to be a difficult cookie to break. He faced the only break-point of the set in the third game but once in the tie-breaker, the Spaniard slowly tightened the screws and clinched it 7-3.

And with the momentum firmly with him, Carreno Busta broke Struff in the very first game of the third set before rounding it off with a second break to complete a 7-6, 6-2 victory.

Carreno Busta, who had earlier benefitted from Novak Djokovic’s default en route the US Open semifinal, and then made it to the quarterfinal at the French Open, hasn’t had the best of times indoors. He was sent packing in the first round by Ugo Humbert at the Antwerp Open and then lost his second round match in Vienna.

He has now pushed on a tad further here but can he now push on to make it to his maiden third round appearance at the Paris Masters?

Qualifier Gombos Goes Past Goffin

We had a sense of Gombos having it in him to trouble Goffin in their second round match despite starting out as a second-favourite but for the Slovakian to win in straight sets against the world number 14 bodes even better for the latter.

Gombos, who had made just three opening round appearances before this in a Masters tournament, has looked rather comfortable in this competition so far. It started off with a couple of qualifying wins before he sent out Marco Cecchinato in the first round.

And in the second against Goffin, the match looked to be headed into an opening tie-breaker when both players held their serves till the seventh game. In the eighth, Gombos broke his opponent to love, but failed to serve out. Not that it mattered a lot because Goffin’s serving woes came back to haunt him again as he fell to another break of serve.

In the second set, it was Goffin who drew first blood with a break in the fifth game but Gombos levelled it off in the eighth game to push it into a tie-breaker this time. The Belgian then raced off to a 5-2 and then a 6-3 lead there, only for Gombos to claw back and win the next five points in a row, completing a stunning victory.

Carreno Busta v Gombos Prediction and Tip

Carreno Busta is 3/10 to win this one and 4/5 to do so in straight sets. With both players having won both their first two rounds in straight sets, it looks like things could get interesting, and we expect Gombos to win the Games Handicap here.

Tip: Games Handicap Gombos +4.5: 8/11 (bet365)
