Diego Schwartzman v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Head to Head

There have been two previous matches between these two players and both came earlier this year. Schwartzman leads 2-0.

In the first, at the Australian Open second round, Schwartzman dropped only seven games en route an easy victory before he needed to come back from a set down to overcome Fokina in the quarterfinal of the Cologne Open.

Schwartzman Straight-Set Winner over Gasquet

Frenchman Richard Gasquet’s recent form pushed Schwartzman to the favourites podium going into his second round match and that’s exactly how the encounter panned out.

Schwartzman blew away an early break when Gasquet levelled things off at 4-4, but the Argentine’s class came through in a tense 12th game in which he broke again to take a set lead.

The second set was a lot easier for the world number nine, as he broke Gasquet immediately after holding to love. Armed with a 3-0 lead, all that Schwartzman needed to do is hold his serve and that’s exactly what he did with three back to back games on serve to love.

The Argentine had a first round bye and looked to have turned his indoor hard court fortunes around with a performance to remember at the Cologne Open where he made it to the final.

Davidovich Fokina Continues to Impress

After a first round win over the 2018 Paris Masters winner Karen Khachanov, the Spaniard Davidovich Fokina was scheduled to play wild-card Benjamin Bonzi in his second round match. Bonzi himself was coming off a solid showing against Federico Coria in his first round encounter, to whom he dropped just three games in an easy win.

And Bonzi showed what he was capable of, putting up a fighting performance against the much-fancied Spaniard. Davidovich Fokina went an early break up in the third game but Bonzi broke back in the sixth to put the match back on level terms.

That joy didn’t last for too long though as Davidovich Fokina retaliated with a break of his own before carving out the set.

Bonzi went a step further in the second set when he drew first blood, breaking his 63rd-ranked opponent in the very first game to go 3-0 up. Davidovich Fokina got back to level terms when Bonzi dropped serve and then went ahead with another break of serve in the ninth game before serving it out to complete the win.

Schwartzman v Davidovich Fokina Prediction and Tip

While Schwartzman is a clear favourite here given his pedigree and form, don’t think Davidovich Fokina will be a pushover. The Spaniard will do well to remember how he made things difficult for Schwartzman in their last meeting in Cologne and could push him yet again.

Tip: Schwartzman to win: 8/15 (bet365)
