Milos Raonic v Marcos Giron Head to Head

In their only match before this, Raonic had defeated Giron at the 2019 Indian Wells Masters, moving into the fourth round of the tournament.

Raonic Continues to Hit the Straps

A poor previous season might have stalled the former world number three’s growth but this season has seen a solid resurrection. Having made it to the final of the Cincinnati Masters earlier at the start of the resumption of the season, Raonic looked like he had hit another roadblock with a couple of early exits.

Fitness looked to be an issue for the Canadian, but a semifinal at the St. Petersburg Open and a quarterfinal at the Antwerp Open – where he retired before his match against Grigor Dimitrov.

That seems to be a thing of the past though. Raonic entered this tournament as the 10th seed, and over the first two rounds has shown similar form in dismantling, admittedly, lower-pedigreed opponents in fine style. First up he crushed Aljaz Bedene 6-3, 6-2 before sending out the French wild-card Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the second.

Raonic broke Herbert once in each set in a match of heavy servers; both times in the fifth game, facing a break-point only once in the encounter. He now faces a qualifier in the third round.

Giron Bounces Berrettini Out

Having qualified for the main draw with wins over Roberto Baena Carballes and Laslo Djere, Giron had started out as a favourite in his opener against Albert Ramos-Vinolas. He was stretched to a third set but came through to make it to the second round.

In his next match, the American who had come through with a quarterfinal appearance at the Antwerp, was a distant second favourite against Matteo Berrettini. And it turned out to be humdinger, getting to the third set and seeing two tie-breakers in the first couple.

The set had no breaks of serve, pushing it into the first of two tie-breakers and Giron overturned a 1-3 deficit to win it. Giron then got himself a break in the second set but not to be outdone, Berrettini broke back to level it at 4-4.

Berrettini then saved a couple of break-points to push it into another tie-breaker which he then won to force the match into the decider.

The third set went to serve till the 11th game, with Giron even saving three break-points in the seventh game but just when it looked like a third tie-breaker was on the cards, the American converted the one match-point he got there.

It was his first win over a top-10 player.

Raonic v Giron Prediction and Tip

Raonic is 1/7 to win this but Giron’s fighting qualities could push his Canadian opponent.

Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 4/6
