Albot in Back to Back Second Rounds

After his relative success at the Cologne Open where he reached the quarterfinals, Albot was knocked out in the qualifiers of the next tournament in the same city. That was followed by a first round win at the Astana Open where he then lost to Tommy Paul in the second.

Coming into the Sofia Open, Albot featured in the qualifiers of the Paris Masters where he lost in the second round of qualification but still made it to the main draw as a lucky loser. And summoning up on some of his best form, Albot defeated a lacklustre Hubert Hurkacz in the first round of that tournament in Bercy.

A second round pounding at the hands of Andrey Rublev – a five-time ATP winner this season – was on expected lines but these early wins across some of these tournaments should keep him going in his quest to retain a top-100 spot in the rankings going into the next season.

He takes on another player who would like to maintain the same, rankings-wise, making it an interesting battle in the first round.

Sugita Finally Showed Some Resistance

It had been a forgettable season so far for the Japanese, with Sugita struggling to put together any wins. In fact, coming into the Astana Open two weeks ago, Sugita had featured in seven tournaments in the post pandemic season and not won a single main draw match.

At four of those tournaments, Sugita had failed to qualify for even for the main draw. Underwhelming would have been an understated reaction for his performances.

It was at the Nur-Sultan Open did Sugita finally show some spark. The Japanese overcame a set deficit in the qualifying second round to make it to the main draw where he then won his first match since February, defeating Damir Dzumhur in a tough three-setter.

That he was routed by the eventual finalist Adrian Mannarino in the second was on expected lines but he comes into this tournament with at least something to show for his effort. Will that be enough though?

Albot v Sugita Prediction And Tip

Albot is a strong favourite here despite there being almost no disparity in the rankings. Backing him to win this too.

Tip: Albot to win
