Simon With Momentum After Qualifier Wins

The 35-year-old Frenchman had to come through the qualifying stages to reach the main draw in Sofia. And he won both of his matches quite easily, something that will give him a lot of confidence.

Simon has had a decent run on the indoor hardcourts in the last month or so with impressive performances at the two Cologne events. First up in Cologne 1, he only allowed Marton Fucsovics three games in the first round in a comfortable win. Even though he lost in the second round, he bounced back in some style a week later in Cologne 2.

He beat third seed Denis Shapovalov on his way to the last eight. In the quarter-final, he lost out in a close contest against Jannik Sinner. He did suffer a shock first-round exit from Paris Masters but the two qualifying stage wins here in Sofia would have put him right back on the track.

The Frenchman’s best result of the year came earlier this year at Marseille. He reached the semis at his home event and beat Daniil Medvedev in the quarters. He followed it up by winning two challenger events on his home soil but has not been able to convert that form on the tour. The former world number six is currently ranked 62 in the world.

Veteran Andrej With a Brilliant Season

For someone who has been a professional player for over 15 years and soon will be playing his 950th career match, Andrej hasn’t seen many seasons better than the current one.

He almost matches his best-ever showing at an ATP tournament earlier this year when he reached the semi-finals at Cordoba. The only time he made it beyond a semis in his career was back in 2016 when he was the losing finalist at Umag.

Andrej has also achieved his career-best ranking of 93 this season. And he is once again set to break into the top 100 with a win here, a feat that he has only achieved twice in a long career. Even though he hasn’t been able to add to his 22 challenger level titles this season, he reached the main draw at the US Open and made it to the second round in the French Open.

The Slovakian is a shrewd operator and is known to play his best tennis in tough three-setters. And he would be hoping that his opponent has an off day and he can take advantage of that. Because at 31, this clay-court specialist will have limited weapons to rely on the fast indoor conditions.

Gilles Simon vs Andrej Martin Prediction and Tip

Simon should progress to the next round comfortably. The Frenchman likes to use the pace generated by his opponent to his advantage and that will come in handy in these conditions.

Tip: Simon to win in straight sets: 6/4 (bet365)
