John Millman v Vasek Pospisil Head to Head

There have been three previous encounters between these two players and Pospisil leads 2-1. The first came at the Challenger level, way back in 2010 and Millman had won that in straight sets. This was followed by a qualifier at the 2012 Australian Open and Pospisil came back from behind to win it before a Davis Cup encounter last year saw the Canadian win in straight sets.

Millman Edges Past Simon

It didn’t come as a huge surprise Millman needed three sets to get past Gilles Simon, which is what we had reckoned would happen too, but the good news for the Aussie was he was finally able to show his dominance over Simon in the final set.

Two close sets which could again have gone either way were followed by Millman crushing his French opponent’s hopes with two breaks in his first three service games.

This was after Simon got the early break of serve in the first set, only for Millman to level it in the eighth game. And then serving to stay in the set, Simon dropped the game to go down a set.

The second set saw the reverse happen. It was Millman who raced to a 2-0 lead only to lose his serve twice in a row. He then levelled things off at 4-4, and soon pushed the set into a tie-breaker. Simon ran off to an easy victory in it but in the end lost the final set 6-2.

Millman, who had earlier won the Nur-Sultan Open, had also defeated Andrey Andreev in the first round in straight sets.

Pospisil Clawing Back with Some Solid Showing

Having missed a major chunk of the previous year’s season with a back injury, Pospisil has made a solid comeback this season with performances to remember. And he makes it to the quarterfinal here in Sofia with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Jan-Lennard Struff in the second round.

It was a match of just two breaks of serve, one in each set, and that was all that Pospisil needed to advance to the last eight. He had a chance to break Struff in the second game before finally getting the better of his opponent’s serve in the next game.

Pospisil then held on easily to win the set. The second set followed a similar pattern when Pospisil broke Struff in the very first game and while he faced break-points of his own, there was no looking back for the Canadian as he completed the straight-set win.

In the first round, Pospisil had been stretched to a third set tie-breaker by the 216th-ranked Illya Marchenko, but a far more assured performance from him ensured he would come into this match as a player to watch.

Millman v Pospisil Prediction and Tip

This one is to call given the good form of both these players. Millman starts off at 1/1 while Pospisil is 3/4 to win this and we think the Canadian has a good chance to scoop this.

Tip: Pospisil to win: 3/4 (bet365)
