Alexandrova with Back to Back Straight-Setters

After having sent Katerina Siniakova out in straight sets in the first round, Alexandrova was stretched in the first set of her second round match by Varvara Gracheva before coming through easily.

Alexandrova won 7-5, 6-1 against Gracheva, after having fallen 2-0 behind, then taken a 4-2 lead before the first set was tied at 5-5 with another break of serve from her opponent.

Unfortunately for Gracheva, that was the last time she looked like she was in the game, as she lost eight of the next nine matches to crash out of the tournament.

Alexandrova had started off the season on a solid note, with a title win at the Shenzhen Open in January and then a month later made it to the semifinal at the St. Petersburg Open. Since then, however, the world number 33 hasn’t seen a single semifinal on the tour.

Can she finish off on a high here with her third semifinal entry this season?

Podoroska Overturns Set Deficit

Having triumphed in straight sets in her first round match against Irina Camelia Begu, Podoroska was pushed to a three-setter by Camila Giorgi in the second. She needed to overturn a set deficit against Italian before easing through to the quarterfinal.

The first set turned into a serve-breaking melee with six breaks of serve that took it into a tie-breaker. Giorgi had her chance to serve it out at 5-3, was broken but in the end took the set in the tie-breaker, winning it 7-4.

The French Open semifinalist tightened her serve in the second set, breaking her Italian opponent in the second and sixth game to wrap it easily and level the proceedings. In the decider, things went to serve till the sixth game, but a break of serve in the seventh was all that was needed by Podoroska to clinch the set and the match as a result.

Counting both the WTA and the ITF circuit and the qualifiers, Podoroska is currently 20-2 on win-loss record. With form and confidence under her belt, it will be interesting to see if the Argentinian world number 48 can push on further against an opponent who has won four WTA titles in her career.

Alexandrova v Podoroska Prediction and Tip

Interesting to note Podoroska is 2/1 to win this match and there’s a definite chance she will be able to push her Russian opponent in this one.

Tip: Podoroska to win a set – Yes: 4/5 (bet365)
