Dominic Thiem v Stefanos Tsitsipas Head to Head
There have been seven previous meetings between these two players and Thiem holds a 4-3 edge over Tsitsipas. Their last match on tour came at the ATP Finals of the previous season, in the title-decider and it was Tsitsipas who carved out a tough, three-set win over his Austrian opponent. In 2019, they had met in another final too, at the China Open and it had been Thiem who had won that one.
Interestingly, their only meeting this year came in the Ultimate Tennis Showdown and Thiem had won that one in four.

Thiem Looks to Shrug Off Vienna Loss
While Thiem’s quarterfinal loss at the French Open was slightly surprising, it could be put down to his exhausting, but title-winning campaign at the US Open which had culminated with the Austrian needing to overcome a two-set deficit to defeat Alexander Zverev in the final.
What was more stunning was his defeat in the Vienna Open where he crashed out in the quarterfinal, losing to the arguably in-form Andrey Rublev in straight sets. The manner in which he capitulated in the second set of that match might have given rise to doubts over his own confidence.
Interestingly, this wasn’t the first time in the post-pandemic season Thiem had been waylaid in such fashion. In the first tournament he participated in after the return from the pandemic break, Thiem went down to Filip Krajinovic 6-2, 6-1 despite being 4/25 odds entering that match.
The round-robin format takes some of the pressure off Thiem alright but at the same time with Rafael Nadal and Rublev a part of his group, he would want to get off to a flying start against a player struggling for fitness in recent times.
This is Thiem’s fifth attempt at the ATP Finals. He was the finalist last year and exited in the group stages in each of the previous three editions.

Tsitsipas to Test Fitness
The Greek was a surprise winner of the ATP Finals last season but enters this edition of this tournament with a question-mark over his fitness. His issues started at the French Open where he had shown remarkable grit in coming back from two sets down against Novak Djokovic before losing the fifth but in the process looked to have injured his leg.
And it was the same leg injury which came back to haunt him at the Paris Masters where he lost in three tie-breakers to Ugo Humbert in the second round.
After that match, Tsitsipas had revealed there were doubts over the defence of his title in London but for now he’s here and will want to try out the fitness. And it could get brutal given there wouldn’t be too many easy opponents in this tournament.
Starting with Thiem, whom he had defeated in the final of this tournament last year, Tsitsipas will proceed to take on Nadal and Rublev and the Greek’s task won’t be getting any easier.
Tsitsipas has a solid record indoors though and if there’s a positive he would like to take with him into this tournament that would be it. Earlier this year, he won his only title of the year in Marseille, which came indoors, and two of his three tournament wins last season were also indoors.
Add the Next-Gen title and the Stockholm Open victory, here’s a player who knows his way around this surface. Can he shrug his injury issues aside though?
Thiem v Tsitsipas Prediction and Tip
It comes as no surprise Thiem is a favourite to win this at 8/11 and we will be backing him to come away a winner against the Greek whose fitness could be a problem.
Tip: Thiem to win: 8/11 (bet365)
