Novak Djokovic v Diego Schwartzman Head to Head

The quest for his sixth title at the ATP Finals will begin with Djokovic aiming to make it his sixth win over Schwartzman, having never lost to the Argentine. Three of those five wins have also come on clay, Schwartzman’s favourite surface and Djokovic is 2-0 in 2020 itself, having beaten him in the Rome Masters final and the Australian Open fourth round.

Djokovic Starts with a Straightforward One

Speaking of the ATP Finals, no match can be really termed as a straightforward encounter but as tough as a tournament like this is, Schwartzman represents the weakest link in this group. And in a format where the number of sets and even games you lose could potentially make a lot of difference, Djokovic can be expected to start off totally tuned in.

Djokovic needs no real incentive but if ever there’s one it’s his record this year. A win-loss record of 39-3 in the season suggests big things, and winning the Australian Open and Cincinnati Masters underline that fact but for him to not add to his Grand Slam count beyond that would have been deeply disappointing.

A stunning ouster at the US Open, which will go in the sport’s folklore and another one-sided defeat in the final of the French Open when some had even tipped him to go the distance, would rankle.

And which is also why Djokovic will come into this tournament with a single-minded focus of going all the way. The sterner tests will come at a later stage but for now, he should start things off with utmost confidence.

Schwartzman Hoping to Rekindle Clay Form

While Schwartzman hasn’t won a single title this season, his form on clay is what has got him his maiden appearance at the ATP Finals. He begun the season with the final at the Cordoba Open, and later stunned Rafael Nadal at Rome to make the title-decider there as well.

A French Open semifinal followed the very next time he took to court, the first time ever he had entered the last-four stage in a Grand Slam. And now he will be making his first appearance in the season-finale competition.

Unfortunately for Schwartzman, his record indoors isn’t extraordinary, although he did make it to the final at the Cologne Open earlier in October. While it’s not the most abysmal – Schwartzman has been a finalist three times – he hasn’t won a single title yet and there have been times he’s knocked out early from the competition despite being one of the top seeds.

His inconsistency indoors will be a telling factor, not just in this opening encounter but also the rest of the tournament.

Djokovic v Schwartzman Prediction and Tip

There’s no doubting how big a favourite Djokovic is for this encounter but odds of 1/7 look rather short. Even a straight-set win for Djokovic, which looks very likely, is 4/9. Probably the best punt of the encounter.

Tip: Djokovic to win in straight sets: 4/9 (bet365)
