Rafael Nadal v Daniil Medvedev Head to Head

It’s not been a very happy hunting time for Medvedev when it comes to Nadal with all three of their meetings having gone the way of the Spaniard. This will be their first outing in 2020 though with all three of those victories having come in 2019.

The matches came in the final of the Montreal Masters and US Open finals and the ATP Finals group stage match.

Nadal Comes Through Despite Thiem Defeat

Nadal was quite forthright about his opinion about his game after his defeat to Dominic Thiem in what was his second match of the tournament. He said despite the defeat, which incidentally came in straight sets, the Spaniard had played some of his best tennis and was in much better shape than he had been a few days back.

The world number two wasn’t too far off the mark with his assessment as he registered a three-set win over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third and final group match to come through to the last-four.

It was a hard-fought victory, but Nadal’s superiority in key moments was telling. Making it to the semifinal of the ATP Finals for the sixth time in his career, Nadal overcame a second set fightback from the Greek to break his opponent thrice in the final set. He won 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

Earlier in the tournament, Nadal had kick-started his campaign with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Andrey Rublev and then lost to Thiem in two tie-breakers.

Medvedev in Red-Hot Form

At the time of writing, Medvedev hasn’t played his final group game and irrespective of the result of that match against Diego Schwartzman, he will finish the group as a table-topper. This is thanks to his facile wins over both, Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic in his opening two encounters.

Both were straight-set victories, bringing him to seven wins in a row at the moment, and with Medvedev having not dropped more than four games in any of the four sets.

Playing his second successive match against Zverev after coming back from behind to beat him at the Paris Masters earlier this month, Medvedev mauled his opponent to register a 6-3, 6-4 win.

The bigger shock came against the world number Djokovic, who was coming off a rout of Schwartzman himself. Medvedev, 2/1 against Djokovic, gave him no chance, and came through 6-3, 6-3.

This comes on the back of some patchy form for Medvedev, having made just one tournament semifinal before his Paris Masters title victory. Can he now get past the world number two just like he did against the world number one?

Nadal v Medvedev Prediction and Tip

It’s not often that Nadal is the second favourite in a match not consisting of Roger Federer or Novak Djokovic but that’s how things stand. Medvedev is 2/3 to win this but we feel Nadal’s tactical acumen could come to his rescue and he would be able to trouble his opponent here.

Tip: Nadal to win a set – Yes: 4/6 (bet365)
