Grigov Dimitrov registered his first ever Masters series title win when he overcame Australia’s Nick Krygios in straight sets at the Cincinnati Open to lift the trophy.
Dimitrov won his third tournament of the year following on from his success at Brisbane and Sofia earlier in the year, but this win came after a string of poor results.
Despite having reached the semi-final at the Australian Open at the start of the year, Dimitrov’s second round defeat at the Indian Wells Masters was followed by an opening loss at the Miami Masters. He lost three successive matches after that, and only managed to get to the third and the fourth round respectively at the French Open and the Wimbledon.
However, he survived a tricky draw at the Cincinnati Masters to clinch this first ever Masters series title, overcoming the likes of Feliciano Lopez, Juan Martin del Potro and John Isner in the process.

After winning the tournament, Dimitrov said:
“I’m just happy and I’m humbled to have that trophy in my hands, and especially to win here, my first Masters 1000. It’s just amazing. I always like this tournament. I have played it quite a few times and always thought this can be maybe one of the first ones, and it is the first one.”
Dimitrov added:
“Going to the Open, it’s for sure a lot of positivity with it, but the most important thing now is just to stay grounded, keep on doing the same work, believe in myself, and just prepare the best way that I can for the Open.”

What the win also did was to bring the Bulgarian back into the top 10 of the ATP Rankings, as he now goes into the week before the start of the US Open ranked ninth in the world.
Dimitrov also has an excellent chance of going deep into the tournament at the 2017 US Open given the disorder at the top at the US Open. There’s no Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka or Kei Nishikori in the tournament, all of whom have succumbed to their injuries while Andy Murray is struggling with a hip injury of his own.
If Dimitrov can get a favourable draw, who knows a bigger award than just his first Masters title might be waiting for him at the end of the US Open.
