Prior to her wrist injury in July 2019 that saw her miss the rest of the season, Vondroušová had been on a great run that saw her reach a career-high ranking of 14th. Such performances saw her reach three finals in that year; the most notable being the French Open final where Ashleigh Barty overcame the then 19-year-old.
She missed the rest of the 2019 season due to that wrist injury, but a shortened 2020 saw her struggle to fully reach her previous heights.
She suffered first-round elimination in six of the ten tournaments that she played in 2020 and only made it past the second round in two tournaments; albeit her favored clay saw her reach the semi-final of the Italian Open.
With her long-term injury now fully behind her, she’ll be hoping to match and even better the heights that she reached in 2019. A good run in Abu-Dhabi could therefore be an indicator of a great season to come.

Hsieh Hoping To Transfer Doubles Form
Despite regaining the top spot in doubles, Hsieh had a horrible singles season in 2020. She suffered first-round elimination in six of the seven tournaments that she played, and only made it to the second round in the other one tournament.
In fact, she finished the season 15-3 on total sets played, a huge contrast to her great 2018 and 2019 singles form.
Now at 35, she may not have many more chances to add to her three singles titles. If she can find a way of transferring her magnificent doubles form, then she should be a force to be reckoned with on the tour this year.
Vondroušová v Hsieh Prediction and Tip
Vondroušová is the favorite in this one, but as season openers often tend to go, I expect this to be an equally hard and fought match. Therefore, good value can be found in anticipating a large number of total games, or in expecting for the match to have more than two sets.
If you want to go ahead with a riskier option, we are probably looking at the Czech to win in three sets.
