Vekic Looking to Overturn Horrendous 2020

Not that it was the best season for a lot of players but Vekic would have been particularly disheartened by the way things went on the court for her.

She managed to figure in 19 matches spread over 11 tournaments, an average of less than two per tournament – an indicator how woefully underwhelming her performances were all season long.

Vekic, who had made it to her first ever round of 16 match at Grand Slams in 2019 when she managed that at the French Open, then showed what she is capable of when she entered the quarterfinals of the US Open that season.

Unfortunately for her, things went so awry that the only tournaments in which she won two in a row came at the Australian Open and the US Open but to go with that, there were six others in which she was bundled out in the first round.

The Croat will hope she can arrest her ranking slide which saw her go from 20th to 32nd in the world in 2020, when she walks out for her opener here.

Pera’s Record Not Too Different

While Pera wasn’t quite ranked as high as Vekic, her performances in 2020 weren’t too different either.

After qualifying for the Adelaide International, she made it to the second round there last season but other than that there weren’t too many notable showings. Following the tennis break due to the pandemic, Pera was bumped out of the Lexington Open in the first round but in that match came a performance worth talking about.

Pera took the first set off Serena Williams before going down in three.

However, any chance of Pera taking confidence from that performance forward was shot down with second round exits at both, the Cincinnati Open and the US Open. And with five defeats from the next six matches she played, it looks like Pera will have to start afresh as she looks to get back to her best.

Vekic v Pera Prediction and Tip

Vekic is a favourite on paper and while her form was patchy last season, she is up against an opponent who didn’t do too much better either. We are looking at a Vekic win but not the most straightforward one.

Tip: Vekic to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
