Paul Looking to Start 2021 Well on Home Soil
Seeded fifth in the tournament this year, Paul will be hoping to go further than last year when he was knocked out in the second round by compatriot Frances Tiafoe.
He has yet to win a senior ATP title, but has enjoyed success on the junior tours where he was won four Challenger events, including three in 2019, all on home soil – in Sarasota, New Haven, and Tiburon.
He begins 2021 at a career high ranking of 52, after a year of consolidation on the senior ATP title. That saw him reach the third round at the start of the year in Auckland, Melbourne and then Acapulco, and post-lockdown, in Nur Sultan, Kazakhstan, where he lost to the eventual winner, John Millman.
His last appearance was at the Paris Masters where he suffered a second-round defeat to Stan Wawrinka.

Nam Rather Inexperienced at This Level
Despite the fact that he is the older man, Nam is very inexperienced at this level. This will only be the fifth time he has played in the main draw of an ATP singles match.
Instead, he spends most of his time on the junior tours. where he has four ITF events and been in the final of two Challenger events, the most recent of which came in 2019 when he lost to the Dane Mikael Torpegaard in Columbus, Ohio,
he has a career high singles ranking of 236, although he is now ranked some 32 places below that, but has enjoyed better success on the doubles court, and should be able to move around the court quickly.
However, he has not played a competitive match since playing a Davis Cup tie against Italy in March prior to lockdown. He may, therefore, lack match fitness,
Paul v Nam Prediction and Tip
Paul will start as the overwhelming favourite against a man very inexperienced at this level, and who has not played a competitive match for more than nine months. Anything other than a straight sets win for the American will be a major surprise.
Tip: Paul to win in straight sets: 4/9 (bet365)
