Muguruza Mauls Mladenovic for Opening Win
The former world number one and two-time Grand Slam winner did not make the best of the starts to her first round match but once Muguruza had got her eye in there was no looking back for her.
Down a break after just one game, Muguruza broke back in the fourth in her opener against doubles specialist Kristina Mladenovic following which the flood-gates opened. Muguruza was up a break the very next game and then wrapped up the first set 6-2 with a third break of serve.
Mladenovic held on to serve in the first three games and then seemed to have upped the ante with a break of serve in the seventh game – again drawing first blood – only to drop her serve the very next game. Muguruza held on and then broke her French opponent to complete a 6-2, 6-4 win.
This follows a solid season for Muguruza who had begun 2020 with a finals appearance at the Australian Open and later made it to the semifinal at the Italian Open, not to mention a few other runs. What she would like is for a quick title win under his belt having last done that in March 2019.

Sasnovich Eases Past 275th-Ranked Opponent
Sasnovich is a former world number 30 who has now fallen to 90th in the world but she did show her superior pedigree in her opening round win over Anna Bondar. Sasnovich defeated the 275th-ranked Bondar 6-2, 6-3 to kick-start the season with a victory, following a decent end to the previous season.
The Belarusian had reached the quarterfinal at the Linz Open following third round appearance at the US Open and another quarterfinal in Istanbul to finish 2020 on a high note.
It also helped Sasnovich to finish in the top 100 after having fallen to 129th in the world by the time the pandemic had hit.
This came just a year on from Sasnovich being 31st in the world, but a string of early exits in the second half of 2019 and early part of 2020 pushed her ranking down till it reached a level whereby she needed a quarterfinal appearance at Palermo to ensure a direct qualification for the US Open.
She will now face an opponent wanting to kick on from having been in the dumps herself in 2019.
Muguruza v Sasnovich Prediction and Tip
Muguruza is 4/11 to win this and she will be our favourite to edge this contest. If you want to go with a slightly riskier option, you could look at over 20.5 games in the match as well (10/11 with bet365)
Tip: Muguruza to win: 4/11 (bet365)
