She is just 18 but Kostyuk went into both her matches so far in this tournament as a favourite and has managed to live up to that billing.
While against Lucie Hradecka she was odds on 3/25 to march ahead – and she did that with aplomb and in straight sets – it was expected to be a lot tougher in the second round against Su-wei Hsieh.
Chinese Taipei’s Hsieh is a doubles specialist but has a few singles titles up her sleeves over the years and was expected to give the Ukrainian a fight. Which is exactly what happened before the world number 99 came through in three sets.
Kostyuk held the upper hand through most part of the first set, breaking Hsieh first and then for the second time after her opponent had broken back. And at one stage it looked like she would run away with the encounter when she held a two-break advantage to go 4-0 up, only to lose that.
A flurry of breaks towards the end of the set pushed into a tie-breaker and a now-confident Hsieh managed to take it 7-4.
A rattled Kostyuk was broken twice early in the first set and was 2-3 down on Hsieh’s serve only to retaliate and win the next four games in a row to clinch the match. An interesting next round encounter awaits against another player ranked outside the top 80.

Zidansek Causing Fernandez Flutter
Leylah Fernandez was 2/5 to rush past Zidansek in their second round match but not only did the Slovenian upset those calculations, she did that in fine style. Zidansek won 6-4, 6-4 to make it to the third round of this WTA 500 event.
Interestingly, this result came after Zidansek had lost the first set of her first round match against Jennifer Brady by a 6-0 margin. It had looked, against a far superior opponent there, she would have play the reset button in the next competition she participated but has achieved a stunning turnaround since.
Zidansek completed a 6-3, 6-4 win there before taking command in the first set against Fernandez with two breaks of serves in the very first set. While her Canadian opponent drew first blood in the second set, Zidansek broke back and then made it two in a row before wrapping up the encounter.
With that kind of confidence, Zidansek could well hold the aces here.
