In a second round match which swung like a pendulum, Sorribes Tormo overcame the loss of the first set and a flurry of breaks in the remaining two sets to defeat Bernarda Pera 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 to set up a third round clash.
The Spaniard, who had reached the quarterfinal at the Ostrava Open late last year as a qualifier, had earlier crushed Nadia Podoroska in the first round in straight sets. When she fell a set behind, however, the Spaniard would have known she was staring at the wrong end of the barrel.
Especially given how difficult she found the in-form Pera to get away.
Twice in the second set itself, Sorribes Tormo got a break ahead only to lose serve very soon after that. It was finally in the seventh game she got herself a decisive break and then drilled home the advantage by breaking Pera in the ninth to win the set.
The third set saw Pera go 3-1 up before her world number 66 opponent came back to level it at 4-4. And with Pera serving to stay in the match at 4-5, Sorribes Tormo got two chances to break and win and did so off the second.

Gasanova Creams Karolina
The 292nd-ranked Gasanova was a whopping 7/1 to upset the former world number Karolina Pliskova in their second round match and to then do win it in straight sets was a result straight out of fantasy land for the Russian
Gasanova has never seen the inside of the 250 rankings on the WTA tour, but she outplayed the third seed in a mere 75 minutes, winning 6-2, 6-4 to reach third round.
It is worth noting this was Gasanova’s first WTA main draw appearance and she was coming off an easy win over Mona Barthel in her opener. Not too many, however, expected her to even take anything of note away from this match but when she saved five of the six break-points she faced and converted a few of her own, even she was surprised.
The Russian admitted after the match: “It was not me on the court.”
Whatever her formula was, it worked rather well and she would now hope to use the same arsenal against her Spanish opponent as well.
Sorribes Tormo v Gasanova Prediction and Tip
While Sorribes Tormo continues to start as a favourite, the odds for a Gasanova win have dropped and she starts 5/2 to create another upset. That said, Sorribes Tormo has shown fighting ability and good form and we think she should win this one.
