Garbine Muguruza v Maria Sakkari Head to Head

The world number 15 Muguruza and the 22nd-ranked Sakkari have never played before this.

Muguruza Sizzles against Sasnovich

Following on from a breezy win over Kristina Mladenovic in the first round in Abu Dhabi, Muguruza wasted no time in making it two in two as she registered a straight-set victory over Aliaksandra Sasnovich in her second round match.

In a match lasting an hour and 20 minutes, Muguruza dropped her serve three times in the match but retaliated strongly to carve out a 6-1, 6-4 win over Sasnovich.

After the two players had exchanged breaks in the very first two games of the match, Muguruza raced away by winning five games in a row to clamp down on the opening set. Sasnovich broke her opponent in the very first game and then again in the fifth game of the second set but each time Muguruza came back to reverse her loss of serve.

And with Sasnovich serving to stay in the match at 4-5, Muguruza took the first chance she got to seal the third round berth.

Muguruza will hope to serve better against an opponent of a much higher quality on Sunday.

Sakkari Wards off Gauff Challenge

The Greek number one Sakkari had a tough second round fixture against Cori Gauff, a teenage sensation who has been on the fringes of making a big breakthrough in the world of tennis. She is already in the top 50 and for some time in this match looked like having taken control.

This was when Sakkari fell two breaks behind to trail Gauff 0-3, but successive breaks of serve brought parity to the proceedings. Sakkari then broke to love to go 5-3 up only to lose serve in the same manner. A couple of holds later, however, Sakkari broke her American opponent again as she looked to serve to take it to the tie-breaker.

The second set was a lot easier for the Greek though. All the fight looked to have gone from Gauff as Sakkari took control, breaking her opponent in the fourth and eighth game to wrap up the match in straight sets.

This win came on the back of a 6-4, 6-2 rout of Anastasia Potapova in round one but she now faces a former world number one and two-time Grand Slam winner. Can Sakkari usurp that kind of a record as well?

Muguruza v Sakkari Prediction and Tip

It’s a closely-matched contest with Muguruza only a slight favourite at 4/5. Her experience should count for something here and we think she might edge the younger Sakkari in this contest.

Tip: Muguruza to win: 4/5 (bet365)
