Hubert Hurkacz v Daniel Elahi Galán Head to Head
This will be the second meeting between the two players.
Hubert Hurkacz won their only previous meeting in straight sets. That was in a 2016 Genova Challenger clash. Additionally, that match was on a clay court.

Hurkacz’s Chase For A Second Title Begins
After a strong 2019 that saw Hurkacz win his maiden ATP title, a shortened 2020 halted his progress. He’d started the year strong just as he’d finished 2019, managing to reach the semi-finals of the ATP Auckland Open in January.
Then came the long hiatus, after which he struggled for consistency. His best result after tennis returned in August was a third-round berth in the Italian Open and a quarter-final spot in Cologne.
Other than those three aforementioned tournaments, the rest of his performances for the year were mixed, causing him to alternate between first and second-round elimination in the other ten tournaments that he played in 2020.
The 23-year-old, having received a bye in the first round due to him being the tournament’s fourth seed, will now seek to not only start the season strong but to prove that 2020 was just a blip that affected all of humanity; he included.
On one of his better-performing surfaces, and coming in as one of the tournament’s highest-ranked players, there’s no questioning that the big-hitter has the ability to go for gold in this tournament and win his second ATP title.

Galán Outsmarts Martin
Galán defeated Andrej Martin in straight sets, doing so in an hour and 20 minutes. Despite that, the match was a close affair.
Martin started strong. He capitalized on his third break point of the game to go 2-1 up in the first set and held his serve in the next game to go 3-1 up. Galán came back and won the next three games, one of which included a converted break point, to go 4-3 up.
The set then went serve until Galán crucially broke Martin in the last game of the set to claim the first set 6-4.
The second set, however, required only one converted break point. Again, that crucial break point came in the last game of the set. Galán outsmarted Martin and won the set 6-4, gifting him the tie.
Galán comes into the second round priced at 2/1 to defeat Hurkacz. A win, however, will give him progress to his second-ever ATP quarterfinal.
Hurkacz v Galán Prediction and Tip
Despite Galán’s first-round efforts, I expect Hurkacz to dominate proceedings from early on. If he can bring out his powerful serves and match his consistency throughout the entire match, I’d expect for him to sail through in straight sets.
For now, with it being his first match of the tour this year, the safer option is in backing him to win the tie.
Tip: Hurkacz to win: 4/11 (bet365)
