Andrey Rublev v Guido Pella Head to Head

This will be the second meeting between Rublev and Pella with the Russian having won the first time they played at the ATP Qatar Open in 2018. That semifinal went into a third set which Rublev won in a tie-breaker before going down to Gael Monfils in the final.

Rublev Won Most Titles Last Year

With five ATP titles under his belt in 2020, Rublev (his tennis racquet specs here) topped the list of men’s singles players with most tournament wins. It was two more than any of the women’s singles players managed last season as well, underlining how dominant the Russian was on the tour in 2020.

While Rublev didn’t quite clinch a Grand Slam title, his five titles included two on hard court surfaces, one on clay and two others indoors to wrap up the season. While he was an early ouster at the Paris Masters and didn’t make it to the semifinals at the ATP Finals, Rublev looked to have done enough to make him a force at the highest level.

Most of Rublev’s losses came against players at the highest level – there were no real freak upsets.

It remains to be seen whether Rublev would be able to replicate that same form in the new year too – we have seen far too many fall apart in the season following a performance like that – but one thing’s for certain, his game will be difficult to decipher unless the opponent plays at their best too.

Pella Coming off a Bad Form Dip

Known for his form on clay, Pella looked to have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic last season as he finished the year on seven wins and 10 defeats.

What made this even more concerning was his performance on the red dirt where he won just three matches spread across six tournaments and his second round appearance at the French Open was his best ever showing.

Interestingly, Pella had featured for Argentina in their previous ATP Cup match against Russia in 2020 as well and lost to Karen Khachanov in straight sets. This would be a good time to avenge that loss but for his own loss of form and confidence.

And the fact that he would be up against a player who has railroaded most of his opponents in recent times.

Rublev v Pella Prediction and Tip

This will be the first match of the season for both players, so rustiness could prove to be a factor but given the difference in the pedigree of the two players, this one could be headed only one way – towards a straight-set win for Rublev.

Tip: Rublev to win in straight sets: 1/3 (bet365)
