Mladenovic Routed in Abu Dhabi

Taking to court at the Abu Dhabi Open earlier this month, the doubles specialist Mladenovic didn’t stand too much of a chance against Garbine Muguruza, and it turned out to be exactly that. The Frenchwoman, former world number 10 went down in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 to crash out of the tournament in the opener.

Mladenovic, who won both, the Australian Open and French Open titles in the doubles draw in 2020, hasn’t won a singles title since 2017 when she clinched the last of her two tournament victories. And she also walks into this tournament on the back of a poor 2020 in singles, especially after the pandemic break.

Forced to withdraw from the US Open after having come in contact with Benoit Paire – who later tested positive for the virus – she went on to lose in the first round at the French Open as well.

Earlier in the season, Mladenovic had qualified to make it to the second round at the WTA Dubai and then reached the second round of the Lyon Open as well – her two, best singles results of the year.

Pegula Comes up With Spark in 2020

While Pegula was ousted in the first round of the Abu Dhabi Open earlier this month, much like Mladenovic, she did show some promise in 2020.

Following her first WTA title win in 2019, Pegula came close to doubling that count with a finals appearance at the Auckland Open first up last season where she went down to Serena Williams. A quarterfinal at the WTA Newport Beach Open followed soon after and then featuring at the World TeamTennis, Pegula won 10 of her 12 matches.

A quarterfinal at the Cincinnati Open as a qualifier was based on wins over Jennifer Brady, Amanda Anisimova and Aryna Sabalenka – her best showing of the year – while she also made it as far as the third round at the US Open, which was her career-best in Grand Slams.

A defeat to Elina Svitolina in Abu Dhabi was on expected lines but against Mladenovic she should have more of a chance.

Mladenovic v Pegula Prediction and Tip

Pegula’s solid record last season holds her in a good stead against a patchy singles player these days and should be a heavy favourite win this.

Tip: Pegula to win: 4/6 (bet365)
